At the 2021 Census 18.1% of Bromley's 135,827 households lived in a detached house and 29.9% in a semi. In Darwin ward, the rural south that includes Downe, more than half (54.2%) lived in a detached house. Up in Crystal Palace and Anerley ward the picture flips: 53.5% lived in purpose-built flats and another 26.0% in part of a converted or shared house.

Bromley's housing, from Penge to Petts Wood

Petts Wood is a planned suburb of the late 1920s. Basil Scruby, a developer from Harlow, had the road layout drawn by the architect Leonard Culliford, and individual builders took the plots, Noel Rees, Walter Reed and George Hoad among them. The houses east of the railway are generally larger and better built; the west side is smaller and more densely packed, because Scruby's money trouble left him little control over the developers there. In Petts Wood and Knoll ward 74.1% of households lived in a detached or semi-detached house in 2021.

Penge is older and denser. The Alexandra Cottages, 181 houses on Albert, Edward, Princes and Victor Roads and Hardings Lane, were built from 1866 to 1868 by the Metropolitan Association for Improving the Dwellings of the Industrious Classes. They went up in semi-detached pairs, each with two or three bedrooms and its own front and back garden, and the estate has been a conservation area since 1982.

Those two ends of the borough mean different cookers. A two- or three-bedroom Victorian cottage usually has room for a 60cm single or a freestanding cooker. Big detached kitchens are where 90cm ranges and AGAs are most likely, and Bromley has plenty of those houses: 34.1% of households in Chislehurst ward and 33.8% in Bickley and Sundridge lived in a detached house in 2021.

Bromley's parking zones and their hours

Bromley's controlled zones are local, many of them named after a single road, and each keeps its own hours. A few from the council's permit table: Penge (PGE) is controlled from noon to 2pm, Monday to Saturday; Petts Wood (S) from 8.30am to 6pm, Monday to Saturday; Chislehurst (U) from 8.30am to 6.30pm, Monday to Saturday. Beckenham's BEC zone is controlled every day of the week, 8.30am to 8pm on the council's table. A local news report says a traffic order extends that to midnight from 10 August 2026, so check the signs in the road.

Visitor vouchers come in books of 15. In a two-hour zone such as Penge, a visit timed outside the controlled window avoids the voucher altogether. Give us the road when you book, so the team knows where to park.

A borough of owner-occupiers

In 2021, 68.5% of Bromley households owned their home, and 33.0% of all households owned it outright. Social renting was 13.2%, and only 1.5% said they rented from the council: Bromley transferred its council housing to the housing association Broomleigh in 1992, and the stock is now owned by Clarion. Private renting was 17.4% overall, rising to 33.3% in Beckenham Town and Copers Cope ward and 32.6% in Bromley Town.

Can you clean an AGA in Chislehurst or Bickley?

Yes. A two-oven AGA is £143 and a four-oven £187. Switch it off the night before, and expect us to be there for about half a day.

Can you come to Beckenham at the weekend?

Yes, at the weekday price. The BEC zone is controlled on Saturdays and Sundays as well, so have a visitor voucher ready for the van.

Do you go out to Biggin Hill and Downe?
