Bromley Common and Keston stopped being a council ward at the May 2022 elections. The boundary commission moved Keston village into an enlarged Hayes and Coney Hall ward, and the common itself, with the Keston Park estate, is now in Bromley Common and Holwood, a ward made in 2022 from parts of three older ones.
Houses on the old common
The Act to enclose the common was passed in 1821 and the enclosure was carried out in 1826. Holy Trinity Church followed in 1842, at the junction of the A21 and Oakley Road, built for a growing population as homes went up around Oakley Road and Princes Plain. The bus garage on Hastings Road dates from 1924, and Bromley Common is one of the borough's conservation areas.
Around Oakley Road the 2021 Census found a mixed stock: of 744 households, 44.5% lived in a semi-detached house, 19.8% in a terrace and 13.0% in a purpose-built flat. Across the present ward, 15.7% of households rented privately and 14.2% from a social landlord. Detached houses south of the bus garage
South of the bus garage, Bromley's Local Plan marks Hollydale Drive, Rowan Walk, Lakeside Drive and Beverley Road as an Area of Special Residential Character: detached and mostly semi-detached houses beside Hollydale Recreation Ground. In the census area that takes in Hollydale Drive and Lakeside Drive, 96.0% of the 627 households owned their home in 2021 and 59.2% lived in a detached house.
Keston Park, the gated estate between Westerham Road, Croydon Road and Farnborough Common, is bigger again. Frederick Rogers bought 143 acres from the Earl of Derby on 9 January 1923, set a minimum plot of half an acre for each house and approved the look of every house himself. Today it has over 200 homes on seven private roads, with security on duty around the clock. Houses on that scale are where a 90cm range cooker or an AGA can be fitted.
Parking off the A21
The A21 through Bromley Common is a main radial route into London, so the van goes on a side road. Bromley's permit table has a zone for Chatterton Village, at the town end of the ward: zone W, controlled from noon to 2pm, Monday to Friday. A visit outside those two hours avoids it, and a weekend visit costs the weekday price.

Is Keston village part of this page?
No. Since 2022 Keston village has been in Hayes and Coney Hall ward, the ward that also takes in Hayes. The price is the same either way.
How long does a double oven take?
About 2 hours. The racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavities and door glass are degreased by hand indoors.
Do you need anything from the house?
A working socket, and the oven cool when we arrive.
