Shortlands station opened on 3 May 1858 as the end of the line, and it stayed a terminus for only two months before the line was extended to Bickley on 5 July 1858.
Shortlands houses from the 1860s on
The station changed the place quickly. William Wilkinson, a railway magnate who had bought Shortlands House and its farm in 1848, sold the farm's 163 acres for building, and the oak and birch of Kingswood were cleared as the new estate went up. A second wave around 1880 brought the villas of the Westmoreland Road area. Maisonette blocks followed from the 1960s.
A house from the 1860s still stands at 114 Shortlands Road. Corner House was designed by Richard Norman Shaw and built in 1868-69 for George Lillie Craik and Dinah Maria Craik. Its list entry puts the original kitchen, larder and scullery on the north side, next to the stable wing, and records that the house was divided into flats in the 1930s. A flat made out of a Victorian house often has its kitchen where a scullery or a bedroom used to be, and the oven in it is usually a 60cm built-in single.

The census area that covers Martin's Road, Station Road and the station end of Beckenham Lane (Bromley 018C) had 801 households in 2021. 33.6% rented privately, against 22.0% across the whole Shortlands and Park Langley ward. Flats made up 41.8% of homes there: 30.9% in purpose-built blocks and 10.9% in converted houses. Postcode records date the flats at 97 Martin's Road to December 2001 and Ravens Gate Mews on Meadow Road to July 2007, which suggests newer blocks among the old streets.

Parking around Shortlands station
Bromley's permit table has a zone named Beckenham Lane, BB, controlled from noon to 2pm, Monday to Saturday. Its permits are sold to businesses only, with no residents' permits or visitor vouchers. The table names zones but does not list streets, and the council puts a zone's hours on signs at its entrances, so check the plate on your road and give us the street when you call.
