The big Victorian villas on South Hill Road were put up for London merchants after the Shortlands House estate was sold off in the 1860s, once the station opened in 1858, and because those houses have deep bay windows and large kitchens, plenty of them run a range cooker or a double. Half a mile off, the Shortlands Village conservation area is smaller artisan cottages built for lower incomes, and the oven work there is nearly always a single. Parking near the station
The villa roads have driveways, so the van pulls in and the carry is short. It is tighter by Shortlands station off Bromley Road, where commuter parking fills the side streets and permit bays are creeping in around Hayes Road. It is all ULEZ. No call-out fee inside the North and South Circular.
