Southborough's name was on the railway first. Bickley station opened on 5 July 1858 as Southborough Road, when the Crays Company extended its line from Shortlands, and was only renamed Bickley on 1 October 1860.

The Chequers and the Crooked Billet
Two pubs on Southborough Lane carry some history. The Chequers is a listed building, Grade II. The Crooked Billet, at 286, was destroyed by a V2 rocket on Sunday 19 November 1944, and a plaque put up on 21 May 2011 remembers everyone killed and injured there; the pub on the site now trades as a Harvester.
Further east, at the corner of Oxhawth Crescent, Southborough Open Space (the old Southborough Recreation Ground) is mown grass with council-built housing to its north and east, according to the London Gardens Trust.
