Anerley is said to be named after one house. In 1827 William Sanderson, a Scottish merchant, bought land at the auction of the former Penge Common and built the first house there, calling it Anerly after a Scots word for solitary or only.

In the census area that takes in the Town Hall and the station side of Anerley Road (LSOA Bromley 009A), 59.7% of the 853 households in 2021 lived in a purpose-built block. Only 25.1% owned outright or with a mortgage; 43.2% rented from a housing association or the council, 26.3% rented privately and 5.1% were in shared ownership.

Victorian villas on Thornsett Road
Further south, Thornsett Road is a street of Victorian semi-detached villas with stucco fronts and gardens at front and back, little changed in a century. Thomas Crapper, the sanitary-ware pioneer, spent his last years at No. 12, and the poet Walter de la Mare lived at No. 14 from 1912; both houses carry blue plaques. A villa of that size kept as one house may have room in its kitchen for a built-in double or a 90cm range cooker.

Nice hardworking lads that always do a good job. We used them for our old flat when moving out and for the new one now, both jobs were done very professionally. My wife is very impressed with the results and would recommend them to friends and family.
