Goddington was a rural manor first recorded in the 1200s, held by Simon de Godyngton, whose family took its name from Godinton in Kent. Nothing was built for centuries. Housing began along Park Avenue in 1926, and the place stayed in historic Kent until 1965, when it passed into the London Borough of Bromley.
Sixty-four hectares that cannot be sold
Goddington Park became council land in 1931 and has been protected since November 1938 under a Fields in Trust deed of dedication, which means the 64 hectares can never be sold off and have to stay a public park. Major Hallet rebuilt the mansion and laid out the upper parkland in the late 1800s. The Manor House and the Lodge are still privately owned, with Bromley managing the parkland round them. Five football pitches, two cricket squares, three rugby pitches, tennis courts and a weekly parkrun sit inside it, and Westcombe Park Rugby Club has been based there since 1990.
1930s semis and bungalows along Goddington Lane
Goddington Lane runs to bay-fronted 1930s semi-detached houses and 1930s detached bungalows, and St Olave's Grammar School has stood on it since 1968. Stock of that age and shape usually means a freestanding cooker or an under-counter single, with 60cm doubles turning up where a kitchen has been redone since.
