Birkbeck station opened on Elmers End Road on 2 March 1930, a year after the Southern Railway reopened the line as part of its electrification, to serve a growing suburban area. It took its name from the Birkbeck Freehold Land Society, which bought much land in Beckenham in the mid-1800s.
Roads named for a land society
Francis Ravenscroft founded the Society in 1851 and borrowed the name of Dr George Birkbeck, the Yorkshire physician who led the push to educate working men. Building on its Beckenham estate began in the 1870s and went on for decades. Beckenham's local history lists roads named after people linked to the Society, with dates: Sultan Street (1880), Blandford Road (1898), Arrol Road (1904), Seward Road (1907), Villiers Road (1908) and Allen Road (1910). Mackenzie Road is named after a Colonel Colin Mackenzie, and Clement Road was not built until after the First World War.
In the census area that includes the south-west ends of Mackenzie, Birkbeck and Ravenscroft Roads (Bromley 015B), 32.8% of the 607 households in 2021 lived in a terraced house and 16.5% in a semi. 21.4% were in a flat made from a converted house and 23.9% in a purpose-built block. 70.8% owned their home, 48.8% with a mortgage.

Parking near the station and the cemetery
The station and its tram stop sit beside Beckenham Crematorium and Cemetery, where W. G. Grace is buried. Bromley's permit table has no zone named after Birkbeck, though it lists Clock House zones controlled on weekdays only: Z1 and Z5 from 8am to 6.30pm, Z2 to Z4 from 10am to noon. The council marks each zone's hours on signs at its entrances and exits, so check the plate at the end of your road. Some teams have a heated tank on the van and use it when they can park close; otherwise everything is done in the kitchen, at the same price, so ask when you book.
