Petts Wood station opened on 9 July 1928, after the developer Basil Scruby agreed with the Southern Railway to put land and money towards it. Within four years the commuter traffic was heavy enough for a second platform to be added in 1932.
Station Square and the Daylight Inn
Scruby planned shops around a square outside the station. Building began on the north-east side in 1928 and the parade was finished by 1930. His estate office stood in the middle of the square, and buyers were collected from it to view plots; it became a restaurant in 1998. Station Square has been a conservation area since 1995.
The Daylight Inn opened in December 1935. Locals had objected to a pub until Charrington's promised a Tudor-style building by their architect, Sidney Charles Clark, and it was named after William Willett, the campaigner for summer time who rode in the woods here. It was listed Grade II in 2015.
East and west of the railway
On the east side Scruby sold plots under covenants: fixed building lines, minimum sizes and frontages, walls of brick, stone or roughcast, and clay or stone tiles pitched at 45 degrees or more. Around forty-five builders worked there. By 1933 he had sold most of it, and with interest charges mounting he sold the land west of the railway to the Morrell Brothers, who built more densely and with less detail.
Around Petts Wood Road and Station Square, 359 of 637 households (56.4%) lived in a semi at the 2021 Census, 16.5% in a detached house and 11.0% in a purpose-built flat. 19.2% rented privately, against 12.1% across the whole ward.
