In July 1965 an excavation sponsored by Orpington Museum began on an eighth of an acre between Poverest Road and Bellefield Road, a plot left empty when a terrace of Victorian brick cottages was pulled down. The diggers were looking for a Roman building and found an Anglo-Saxon cemetery.
Fordcroft, under the Poverest Road cottages
The site is known as Fordcroft, a name already in use in a St Mary Cray will of 1583. Its first two seasons turned up 16 cremations and 29 burials, most of them inside the footprint of the old cottages, along with Roman pottery and coins from the late first to the fourth century. Some people who had lived in those cottages came to watch, and found out they had spent years a short way above the graves. Next door, a householder digging an inspection pit in his garage floor came up with a spearhead and a skull.
Is Poverest a separate place from St Mary Cray?
On paper, hardly. The name comes from a farmstead traced back to the early 14th century, a little over half a mile west of Fordcroft. Today Poverest Road, Friar Road and Hayfield Road all sit in Bromley's St Mary Cray ward, the House of Commons Library calls the Census area here St Mary Cray South, and the council's Local Plan lists the shops on Marion Crescent and Tillingbourne Green as St Mary Cray parades. The St Mary Cray page deals with the old village across the river; southwards, the streets run on into Orpington.
The farmland itself went to industry in the 1930s. Factories went up along Cray Avenue on the west bank: Coates Brothers moved their printing-ink factory there in 1936, the same year Wilson's built a new cooperage. The Local Plan still counts St Mary Cray as the borough's largest industrial area, at just under 40 hectares.

Very satisfied with the service. They were slightly late at first but I got a call from customer service to let me know, and it was all fine. The oven man, as he called himself, arrived and worked very hard for a couple of hours. My oven now looks like it has never been used.
