The 180 acres of Chislehurst and St Paul's Cray Commons are maintained by neither Bromley Council nor the National Trust. A voluntary board of up to 16 Trustees looks after them under the Metropolitan Commons (Chislehurst and St Paul's Cray) Supplemental Act, which residents worried by gravel digging and encroachment won in 1888. Bromley's permit table lists one Chislehurst zone, U, controlled from 8.30am to 6.30pm, Monday to Saturday. Sunday is outside those hours, and a weekend visit costs the weekday price.
Flats and detached houses north of the station
Lower Camden, Susan Wood and Islehurst Close, just north of Chislehurst station, fall in one small census area. Camden Place, the emperor and the golf club
Between those streets and the Common stands Camden Place, finished in 1717 and listed Grade II*. Napoleon III lived there in exile and died there in 1873. His son, the Prince Imperial, was killed in South Africa in 1879, and a monument to him went up beside Prince Imperial Road in 1881, paid for by public subscription. The Trustees still look after it, along with the war memorial on Royal Parade (1920). William Willett, the Chislehurst builder who campaigned for summer time, bought the Camden Place estate meaning to build houses on it, and Chislehurst Golf Club was inaugurated there in 1894. The house is still the clubhouse.
