In March 1934 Elsy and Jim Borders bought a house on the Coney Hall estate, built by Messrs E Morrell. Soon the ceilings cracked, plaster fell, the roof leaked and the bath dropped from its place.
The Coney Hall mortgage strike
The Borders stopped paying the Bradford Third Equitable Building Society, and Elsy encouraged 500 new home owners in her area to default on their building-society payments too. With no money for a lawyer, she read law at the London School of Economics and argued her own case in the Chancery court for 18 days in 1938. She won only part of it, but the judge gave the couple clear title to the house with nothing more to pay. The historian Dr Kim Reynolds told the writer Bob Ogley that the defects in the Coney Hall houses were later put right and the houses continued to be lived in.
The estate itself went up in the 1930s on the farmland of Coney Hall Farm, which the Morrell brothers bought after the death of its owner, Sir Henry Lennard, in 1928. The typical house has two storeys, a polygonal bay window and a half-timbered gable. Bromley's Local Plan lists a Coney Hall neighbourhood parade on Croydon Road that takes in Coney Hall Parade and Nos 4-24 Kingsway.
