Basil Scruby and the architect Leonard Culliford drew the masterplan for this suburb in 1928, and work started in Petts Wood Road soon after. Scruby bought the estate in sections, laid the roads, split the plots and sold them on to builders with covenants controlling how the houses could look. Noel Rees was the best known of those builders. His half-timbered Tudorbethan houses are on The Chenies, Princes Avenue, Kingsway, Wood Ride, Willett Way, St Georges Road and The Covert, and the ward takes in that town centre plus The Knoll, the stretch of housing running towards Orpington.
A 1930s semi has a 1930s-shaped kitchen problem
The original galley at the back of a Scruby-era semi was small, so most have been knocked through or extended by now. What sits in the new bit is usually a built-under double at £110 or a freestanding 60cm cooker. Fewer singles here than in a flat postcode. Will you take the door apart?
Where the design allows, yes. Between the inner and outer glass is where most of the brown film sits, and on a lot of 1990s and later ovens the panels come out.
My cooker is freestanding. Does it need pulling out?
Not usually. The clean is of the oven itself. Say if you want the sides done and the technician will tell you what is possible without disconnecting anything.
Can I book a Sunday?
Yes. Seven days. Station Square gets busy on a Saturday, so a Sunday morning is often the quieter option.
