The main road from London to Hastings once ran through Farnborough along Church Road and Old Hill, south of the village. St Giles' Church stands on Church Road; a severe storm destroyed it in 1639 and it was rebuilt. Number 5 Church Road, an early 18th-century house, is Grade II listed, and the George was already there in the 16th century and served as a coaching inn.

Farnborough was a Kent parish until 1 April 1934, when it was abolished: 1,426 acres went to Orpington Urban District and 3 to Bromley. It had 4,373 residents at the 1931 census. The post-war years brought suburban streets almost up to the village, while the Green Belt stopped building to the south. The old core is now Bromley's Farnborough Village conservation area.
The census area around Church Road is more mixed than the Farnborough Park estate to the north-west, where 65.9% of households in its census area lived in a detached house. Of its 786 households in 2021, 36.4% lived in a semi-detached house, 20.9% in a terrace and 14.0% in a purpose-built flat. Half of them, 49.9%, owned their home outright, and 13.4% rented privately.
