Wickham Court, the manor house built for Sir Henry Heydon in the reign of Henry VII, is listed Grade I, and the Lennard family owned it from 1579 until 1929.
From village to 1930s suburb
The railway from Elmers End reached West Wickham in 1882 and changed surprisingly little. Apart from a few roads off the High Street and the Railway Hotel, the place stayed rural into the 1920s. Then the line was electrified in 1926, the lord of the manor died in 1928, and other local estates were broken up. Fields were covered with houses that varied little in design, the village High Street filled with shops, and by 1933 the change was almost complete. In 1935 the new suburb moved from Bromley Rural District into the new borough of Beckenham. From 1956 Glebe Way linked the High Street with Coney Hall.

In the census area the House of Commons Library calls West Wickham (MSOA Bromley 030), 47.1% of the 4,861 households in 2021 lived in a semi and 16.8% in a detached house; 14.7% were in a purpose-built block. 82.6% owned their home, and 45.5% owned it outright, with no mortgage left.
A cooker in a 1930s house will have been replaced since the house was built, so it may be a built-in double or a freestanding model. The method does not change with the age of the oven. Dust sheets go down, racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen; the door comes apart where its design allows.
