Penge West's first station opened on the London and Croydon Railway in 1839 and closed in 1841; the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway reopened it on 1 July 1863, the day the Chatham line opened Penge East, then called Penge Lane.
The station on Anerley Park
The entrance is on Anerley Park, the road, and the station is the way in to Crystal Palace Park by its south gate. Today the line is London Overground's Windrush line, with a few Southern trains at peak times. The Southern Railway gave Penge West and Penge East their present names on 9 July 1923. The roads running south towards Anerley are in Crystal Palace and Anerley ward, and the High Street side is in Penge and Cator.
From villas to the Groves estate
Laurel Grove, south-east of the station, was part of the Anerley estate, built up from 1851 with large houses as the Crystal Palace arrived. Penge was reputedly the most bombed town in the country, and after 1945 many of those houses, damaged in the war, were pulled down.
Penge Urban District Council put up flats in their place. Laurel Court, eight storeys and 38 flats on the Groves estate, was approved in 1955 and has since been demolished; Essex Tower, 17 storeys and 97 flats, was approved in 1965.
The census area the House of Commons Library names Anerley North and Penge West (Bromley 009), which takes in Laurel Grove and the Groves estate, shows what followed. Of its 4,444 households in 2021, 52.4% lived in a purpose-built block of flats and 16.0% in a flat inside a converted house; 46.5% rented from a housing association or the council, and 25.0% rented privately.

Bromley's permit table names no zone after Penge West or Anerley. Its Penge zone, PGE, is controlled from noon to 2pm, Monday to Saturday.
