Locksbottom takes its name from the Lock family, who held land here in the 1700s. It sits south of Bromley Common, west of Crofton and north-west of Farnborough, and although the London Borough of Bromley runs it, the post town is Orpington and the dialling code is 01689 rather than 020, which catches out anyone who assumes a London borough means a London number.
The hospital site goes back to 1845
The Bromley Union workhouse infirmary opened here in March 1845, gained a female infirmary block in 1898, two more medical blocks in 1929 and a new wing in 1936, by which point it was Farnborough County Hospital. It joined the NHS in 1948 as Farnborough General. Taylor Woodrow built the replacement on the eastern part of the site and the Princess Royal University Hospital opened on 1 April 2003, run by King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. Two gated parks sit on the western edge
Keston Park and Farnborough Park are private gated estates, and the houses inside them are a different proposition from the parade. Big kitchens, and cookers to match. A two-oven AGA in Farnborough Park is £143. Racks, shelves, trays and side runners come out and soak in the heated tank in the van, so nothing large gets carried through a hall.
The village is a shop parade and three pubs
The centre is the run of shops at the western end of Crofton Road. Three pubs serve it: the Black Horse, the British Queen and Ye Olde Whyte Lion. Chapter One has been a restaurant on the same spot since the 1930s, when it opened as the Fantail. Most of the housing around them went up between the wars, when the suburb spread east until it ran into Orpington, so the common pattern is a 1930s semi with a fitted kitchen and an integrated oven. Do you clean an AGA cold?
Yes. It needs to be off and cool before we start, so shut it down the night before if you can.
Will the kitchen smell of chemicals?
It should not. The soaking is done outside in the van. Indoors the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand with non-caustic products.
Is this enough for a letting inventory?
Yes. The door glass is split where the design allows, which is the part a clerk checks first.
How long will you be in the house?
Ninety minutes for a single, about two hours for a double.
