The Bromley Union workhouse opened at Locks Bottom on 13 March 1845. The Princess Royal University Hospital stands on the eastern part of the same site today. The place takes its name from the Lock family, who held land here in the 1700s.
Homes on the old hospital ground
The workhouse gained a female infirmary in 1898 and two medical blocks in 1929. A new wing followed in 1936, when it was renamed Farnborough County Hospital, with 811 beds; it joined the NHS in 1948 as Farnborough General. The PFI-built PRUH opened on 1 April 2003. New housing, sheltered homes among it, went up on part of the old site. The converted workhouse chapel is now the Primrose Centre, a support centre for people with breast cancer.
Flats are commoner around the hospital than across the ward, where 9.1% of households lived in one. In the census area around the hospital, 192 of 888 households (21.6%) lived in a purpose-built block in 2021, and 13.0% rented privately. A flat or a sheltered home usually has a built-in single oven, set under the worktop or at eye level in a tall housing.

The Crofton Road parade and St Michael's
Locksbottom's shops are the parade at the western end of Crofton Road, running from the junction with Farnborough Common to Tugmutton Common. The hexagonal tower of St Michael and All Angels, a Catholic church on Crofton Road, is a local landmark. Around 1961 the Orpington parish priest, Fr Michael Phelan, saw that the housing growth in Locksbottom, Farnborough and Crofton would soon need a church of its own; H. Bingham Towner built it, and it opened on 1 November 1964.
Parking on Crofton Road: zones LB and E
Bromley's permit table has two Locksbottom zones. Zone LB is controlled 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and offers no residents' permits or visitors' vouchers; its business permits are limited to 1 to 11 Princess Parade and to numbers 332 to 370, 391 and 399 to 425 Crofton Road. With no visitors' vouchers in zone LB, for a flat above or behind the shops we find a legal space nearby and walk in from there.
Zone E is controlled from 8.30am to 6pm, Monday to Saturday. Residents in it can buy visitors' vouchers, which is the likeliest way to cover the van on a weekday. Zone E is not controlled on a Sunday, and a Sunday visit costs the weekday price.
