In 1920 the London County Council bought 572 acres of farmland for its Downham estate, and 61 of those acres lay over the line in Bromley, which was then still part of Kent.
Downham streets on the Bromley side of the line
Building began in 1924 and the original estate was finished by the summer of 1930. The LCC's plan of 1934 shows this corner as completed in 1930: Southover running down past a reservoir to Burnt Ash Lane, a school between Rangefield Road and Keedonwood Road, and Sudbury Crescent, Bonville Road and Brook Lane towards the bottom edge. Before any of it was built, Lewisham's local history centre records a rifle range near Rangefield Road in the 1890s, with farmland around it, much of it belonging to Holloway and Shroffolds farms.
The borough boundary still cuts through. Keedonwood Road, Boyland Road and Headcorn Road each have some postcodes in Lewisham and some in Bromley, while Southover, Sudbury Crescent, Detling Road and Brook Lane sit in Bromley's Plaistow ward. The houses are mostly two-storey brick terraces of the 1920s.
Renting on the Bromley side of Downham
Ideal Homes, a history of south-east London suburbs hosted by the University of Greenwich, says the right to buy of the 1980s broke Downham's standing as one solid block of council housing. Here the split is still close to even. The census area around Sudbury Crescent, Brook Lane and Rangefield Road (Bromley 040D) had 619 households in 2021: 43.3% rented from a social landlord, most of them from a housing association, 41.8% owned their home and 14.2% rented privately. Across the whole borough of Bromley only 13.2% rented socially.

Parking near Southover and Rangefield Road
Bromley's permit zone table has no zone called Downham, though it does list two called Burnt Ash Lane, and Southover ends at Burnt Ash Lane. The table names zones but does not list streets, and the council says the times of restriction are shown on signs at the entrances and exits to a zone, so the plate at the end of your road is the one to read. Tell us the street when you book, so the team knows where to park.
