The executors of Charles E. Goodhart sold the Langley Park estate in 1908, and H and G Taylor, a building firm out of Lewisham, took roughly 700 acres of the parkland to lay a garden estate across it. Wickham Way, Elwill Way, Hayes Way, Malmains Way, Whitecroft Way and Styles Way were all set out in 1909 and 1910. Reginald C. Fry drew the layout and most of the houses.
Thirty-two hectares of it are protected
Bromley designated the first phase a conservation area in 1989, about 32.3 hectares of villas, mature trees and original plot boundaries. Number 2 Whitecroft Way, another Fry design, won the Ideal Home competition in 1910 and was put up at Olympia for the 1912 Ideal Home Show. The Langley Park Garage of 1929, known locally as the Chinese Garage, adjoins that first phase and is Grade II listed.
Large houses tend to hold large cookers
Houses built for comfort on generous plots were given generous kitchens, and the stock through this pocket of BR3 leans toward freestanding range cookers and cast-iron AGAs rather than the fitted single you meet in a converted flat, which moves both the timing and the figure on a visit. A 90cm range is £114 and a two-oven AGA is £143. Booking a range cooker in one of the Whitecroft Way houses costs what it costs anywhere else we drive.
Driveways instead of permit bays
Most of the estate has its own drive. That is unusual for us. The van needs to stand close enough to your kitchen door for racks, shelves, trays and side runners to reach the heated tank, which never comes inside. The cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand with non-caustic products, and the oven is heat-tested before we leave.

Does the conservation area designation affect an oven clean?
Not at all. It governs what you may alter outside, not what happens in your kitchen.
My AGA is never fully off. What do you need from me?
Let it go cold before the appointment. A two-oven AGA is £143 and the cast-iron parts want handling at a temperature that will not crack them.
Will there be a chemical smell in the house afterwards?
There should not be. The soaking happens in the tank outside, and the products used indoors are non-caustic.
Do the gated roads cause you a problem?
Only if we cannot get in. Langley Park and Langley Waterside are gated, so tell us the entry arrangement when you ring 020 8077 5225.
