Charles Darwin lived at Down House on Luxted Road from 1842 until he died there on 19 April 1882. Historic England lists the house at Grade I for that reason; on its architecture alone, the entry says, it would be Grade II.

Several of the village's other listed houses are on the same road. Walnut Tree Cottages, Nos 1 to 3 at the corner with the High Street, are timber-framed but were refaced in the 18th century, with flint on the ground floor and weatherboarding above.
