Orpington station came into use on 2 March 1868, when the South Eastern Railway opened its new line through Chislehurst to Sevenoaks for passengers. In the decades that followed, the village grew into a commuter suburb.

Parking on and around the High Street
The High Street became a restricted parking zone on 5 July 2010. It has no yellow lines; the council's notice at the launch said the zone applies at all times and that parking is allowed only in the marked bays, with loading bays kept for commercial vehicles. Away from the High Street, Bromley's permit table lists four Orpington zones with different hours: K runs 8.30am to 6.30pm, Monday to Saturday, with no visitor vouchers; M runs 11am to 2pm on weekdays. A medieval house on Church Hill
The Priory, a medieval house on Church Hill, and All Saints' Church beside it are both listed Grade II*. Orpington Urban District Council bought the house in 1947 and its grounds in 1959, and Priory Gardens opened as a public park in 1962. The gardens are on Historic England's register: laid out from 1865 by the owner, Dr Herbert Broom, then reworked after 1919 by the painter Cecil Hughes and his wife, a friend of Gertrude Jekyll.
