New Beckenham station sits where the 1857 line to Beckenham Junction and the 1864 line to Addiscombe part. The first station, opened on 1 April 1864, stood just south of the junction; the present one, just north of it, opened in October 1866.
From Copers Cope Farm to a railway suburb
The fields around the station were Copers Cope Farm, about 250 acres, which the Cator family acquired in 1783. The Cators first tried to build on it in 1813, but houses only began to spread here in the 1860s, after the railway came, and most of the area was built up between the mid-1870s and the mid-1890s. A 2.1-hectare patch beside the station on Copers Cope Road has been a conservation area since December 1998.
Blocks of flats where the villas stood
A lot of the Victorian building has since gone. After the Second World War much of the Cator estate was rebuilt with modern houses and flats, and in 2005 the Beckenham MP, Jacqui Lait, told a parliamentary debate that single family homes in the Copers Cope area were being knocked down and replaced with blocks of flats.
The 2021 Census shows the mix now. In the area round the station and Copers Cope Road (Bromley 006C), 79.9% of the 1,029 households in 2021 lived in a purpose-built block of flats; only 5.9% had a terraced house and 3.2% a semi. 37.4% rented privately.

The Copers Cope permit zone
Bromley's permit table lists a Copers Cope zone, R, controlled from 8am to 9.30am, Monday to Friday, with an 8am to 2.30pm weekend control in its R3 section only. The council marks a zone's hours on signs at its entrances and exits, so the sign at the end of your road shows whether it applies. If your block has a car park for visitors, tell us when you book.

BR3. The station and Copers Cope Road are in Bromley's Beckenham Town and Copers Cope ward. Lennard Road, running west towards Kent House, is in Penge and Cator ward but keeps BR3 postcodes.
