Ruxley turns up in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Rochelei, with twenty households, and it sat on a main road central enough that the Hundred of Ruxley met here and took the name. Thirteen miles south-east of Charing Cross, and still green belt.
A church that spent four centuries as a barn
St Botolph's went up in the 1200s, dedicated to Botwulf of Thorney. It served as a church for around three hundred years until Cardinal Reginald Pole deconsecrated it in 1557 and merged the parish with North Cray, after which it spent more than four hundred years working as a farm building. Archaeology in the 1960s turned up an older wooden structure underneath, which points to a Saxon church on the same ground. It is still standing, Grade II listed and a scheduled monument, in poor repair on the Ruxley Manor Garden Centre grounds east of Ruxley Wood.
One settlement, two boroughs, two dialling codes
Ruxley straddles the boundary between Bromley and Bexley, with Maidstone Road, the B2173, running along the border. The Sidcup Bypass does the same job for the post office: DA14 Sidcup to the north, BR5 Orpington to the south-west. Phone numbers here are 020 or 01689 depending which side of a line your house happens to be on. Whichever it is, the price is the same. Fixed price, no premium-area surcharge.
The green belt keeps the houses to the edges
Ruxley sits in the Metropolitan Green Belt between Sidcup and Swanley, so the settlement itself is thin: Ruxley Gravel Pits alone is a biological Site of Special Scientific Interest of 18.7 hectares with four lakes in it. The kitchens are on the edges, in the DA14 streets north of the bypass and the BR5 ones toward St Paul's Cray. The A20 Sidcup Bypass has been a dual carriageway since 1968 and Ruxley Corner is a five-exit roundabout, so we plan the parking round the address rather than the postcode. A double oven on the Sidcup side is £110 and takes about two hours.
