Pratt's Bottom sits about 100 metres above sea level, south of its parent parish of Orpington and past the edge of London's built-up area. The village is essentially one road. Rushmore Hill carries the school, the shop, the Bulls Head and two small churches, with a few side roads off it, and the village hall stands on Norsted Lane looking onto the green. The post office closed in 2008.
The name is older than the borough
A bottom is a valley or a hollow, and the Pratts were a family seated here from the 14th century. The village belonged to Chelsfield parish in Kent, lost its parish to Orpington Urban District in 1934, and became London only in 1965 when the Borough of Bromley was formed. A toll gate went up on the London to Rye road in 1748. Its turnpike cottage came down in the 1930s and still appears on the village sign.
A London postcode without the London parking
BR6 is a Greater London postcode, but none of the usual inner-London working assumptions hold here: the village is off the A21, about a mile from junction 4 of the M25, and the nearest rail link is Knockholt station, which is not in the village at all. Yes, seven days. It is still Bromley, and a BR6 address costs the same as anywhere else, with no premium-area surcharge.
How dirty is too dirty?
Rarely a problem. The soak does the work on the removable parts, so age tends to affect how long it takes rather than whether it comes up.
What do you need from me on the day?
