Bedford Park, begun by Jonathan Carr in 1875 on land around Bedford House, had 490 houses on 113 acres by 1883, and Richard Norman Shaw was its estate architect from 1877 to 1880. The Victoria County History says it is well known as the parent of England's garden suburbs; it lies partly in Hounslow and partly in Ealing.

Chiswick filled up quickly in the late nineteenth century. On the vicar's glebe land, uniform terraces around Glebe Street had reached about 470 houses by 1891. For its first council housing, planned for 1903, Chiswick Urban District Council chose Strand-on-the-Green: 34 houses of two flats each, in Cressey Avenue, later Mead Close. Census figures show how many Chiswick houses have since been divided: in Chiswick Gunnersbury ward 17.8% of households lived in a converted or shared house in 2021, nearly three times the borough figure of 6.4%.

Elsewhere the borough is more varied. Brentford East ward is mostly flats, with 76.1% of households in a purpose-built block. Further west the semi-detached house takes over: it was the commonest home in all three Heston wards and in Feltham North, and Hounslow South ward was 50.6% semis.

Hounslow's CPZs and permit-free flats

Hounslow's controlled parking zones show their hours on entry boards where you drive in, and the bays inside vary: resident bays, shared pay and display, business bays and loading bays among them. Residents can apply for visitor permits. The council warns that not every property in a CPZ is eligible, because a planning condition or legal agreement can bar occupiers from permits, and this tends to apply to new builds.
