West London under the flightpath

Most of our Hounslow week runs east to west, and the oven changes as you go. At the Chiswick end, W4 and the Brentford riverside, the stock is Victorian and Edwardian terrace with a fair number of freestanding cookers and wide built-in ovens. Push out through Hounslow Central, Heston and Cranford to Feltham and the pattern turns to 1930s semis and post-war estate housing, where a slot-in gas cooker with a single cavity and a grill above is the usual find. Feltham grew on market-garden land that the railway reached in 1848, and most of it went up from the thirties onward, so the kitchens are compact and the cookers are workhorses.

The Brentford new-build belt

Brentford has changed more than anywhere else in the borough. The old Golden Mile stretch of the A4 now carries the Great West Quarter, a Barratt scheme of flats, and the canal side holds Brentford Lock West on Narrowboat Avenue with around seven hundred homes across its phases. Nearer the river the Kew Bridge schemes keep handing over, Kew Bridge Rise and the KEWB blocks a couple of minutes from the Gtech stadium among them. These flats almost all come with an integrated single oven under the worktop, an induction or ceramic hob and a built-in extractor, which we ease out where the fitting needs it and refit without marking the cabinetry.

Chiswick and the period ranges

The Chiswick end changes the job again. Around Bedford Park, the Glebe Estate and the riverside terraces at Strand on the Green, the kitchen often holds a 90cm Rangemaster or a cast-iron AGA rather than a slot-in cooker. Those take longer, because every enamel plate and both cast ovens are cleaned by hand while the removable parts soak, so a cast-iron AGA clean around Bedford Park is a longer booking than a standard single. The oven is heat-tested and signed off before we leave.

Parking, permits and the van

Because parts ferry to and from the tank, where the van sits is a real part of the day here. Hounslow runs controlled zones across most station areas and the tighter terraced streets, and the Bedford Park roads such as Acton Lane and The Avenue fill early. The new Brentford developments add a wrinkle: many flats carry a planning condition that bars residents from a parking permit at all, so the kerb outside is often single yellow or resident-only. Tell us the road and the permit setup when you book, so a permit-free new-build or a short-hours zone does not leave the van boxed in mid-clean. The whole borough sits inside the ULEZ, which went London-wide on 29 August 2023 and which the van is compliant for; Chiswick had been in the zone since 2021.

Hounslow turns over a lot of rentals, and the check-out oven clean rides on the back of it. The Chiswick lettings run out of Turnham Green Terrace, where Fletchers, Marsh and Parsons and Winkworth sit within a few doors of each other, while the Brentford new-builds and the Feltham streets carry their own churn.
