St Mary the Virgin, set back on Hatton Road at the edge of Bedfont Green, has parts dating from about 1150, and the two yews at its entrance are clipped into peacocks, one of them dated 1704.
Bedfont Green and the Staines Road
Hounslow made the green and its surroundings a conservation area on 25 November 1974. The village began as a roadside settlement on the Roman road to Silchester and was a major coaching stop by the seventeenth century. Of the six inns its appraisal names, only the Bell survives, as the Bell on the Green, and a Grade II milestone on Staines Road marks 13 miles from London. The railway crosses Bedfont but has no station here. Heathrow opened just to the north in 1946, and the council's 2024 design code says a significant number of local people work at the airport or in airport-related firms.
The conservation area also takes in the Fairholme Estate, off the south side of Staines Road. T Cecil Howitt built it in 1934 as low-rent housing paid for by a bequest from Elizabeth Jones of Fulham: 72 one and two storey brick homes with Dutch gables and tile-hung walls round a large green quadrangle, listed Grade II along with the community hall.
Post-war semis north of the green
North of the green, up Hatton Road towards Hatton, the appraisal describes a large area of mostly early post-war two-storey semis, with a few short terraces and bungalows. Across Bedfont in the mid-twentieth century, Middlesex County Council built new housing in a simple Arts and Crafts or a plain modern style. In Bedfont ward 41.0% of the 5,316 households lived in a semi-detached house at the 2021 Census, the largest group, and 30.7% in a purpose-built flat.
Newer homes add to the mix. Hatchett Road is a late-1970s estate of houses, flats and maisonettes arranged round parking courts, and south-west of the conservation area are 2000s blocks of flats and maisonettes with three-storey townhouses. Shared ownership is commoner here than in the two Feltham wards: 5.3% of Bedfont ward households in 2021, against 3.4% in Feltham West and 1.1% in Feltham North. A new-build flat often comes with an integrated oven, sometimes a pyrolytic one.

The village round the green, historically East Bedfont, is in Hounslow's Bedfont ward with TW14 8 postcodes. West Bedfont, the old hamlet along Long Lane, is in Spelthorne and has Stanwell TW19 postcodes.
Is parking difficult near the green?
Staines Road, the A315, is the main road through the village, so if you live on it, tell us when you book where a van can stand nearby. Hounslow says the entry boards at each CPZ show its operating times, so check the boards and signs on your own street.
How long will you be in the house?
About 90 minutes for a single, 2 hours for a double and 2 to 3 hours for a 90cm range. A two-oven AGA takes half a day and has to be switched off the night before so it is cool.
