Turnham Green station stands on Turnham Green Terrace, at the eastern edge of Chiswick Common and about 200 metres north of Chiswick High Road. The green it is named after, with Christ Church on it, lies on the far side of the High Road.
Flats over the shops on Turnham Green Terrace
The London and South Western Railway opened the station on 1 January 1869. Substantial houses went up on the Terrace around 1800, and by the early 1890s the Victoria County History records the streets leading north from the High Road to the common and the railway as built up, Turnham Green Terrace and Thornton Avenue among them.
The 2021 Census shows what those streets hold now. The census area running from Thornton Avenue and Mayfield Avenue down the east side of the Terrace and across the High Road (Hounslow 001B) had 668 households in 2021. Of those, 32.5% lived in part of a converted house and 13.9% in a commercial building, the census category that covers a flat over a shop. Just 19.3% had a terraced house.
A flat above a shop may have its own street door and a long flight of stairs, and a small kitchen with a built-in single or a slim freestanding cooker. That changes the access, not the method. Dust sheets go down, then the racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, while the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen.

In the same census area 44.5% of households rented privately in 2021, 40.5% owned and 14.8% rented from a social landlord. West of the Terrace, in the census area round Chardin Road and Chiswick Common Road (Hounslow 029D), 43.1% of the 885 households lived in a purpose-built flat and 38.3% rented privately.

Parking zones round Turnham Green station
Hounslow's parking zone map splits the streets round the station. East of Turnham Green Terrace is the East Chiswick zone, controlled 9am to 7pm, Monday to Saturday, except on four streets that run longer: Ennismore, Mayfield and Thornton Avenues and Upham Park Road are controlled 9am to 9pm from Monday to Saturday and 5pm to 9pm on Sunday. West of the Terrace, Chardin Road and Chiswick Common Road are in Mid Chiswick, which the map lists as 9am to 7pm, Monday to Saturday. A Hounslow order that came into operation on 4 August 2025 extended Mid Chiswick to Sundays, 9am to 7pm, on the single yellow lines in Chardin Road and in parts of Chiswick Common Road.
