Elmbridge's design guide calls Walton the largest town in the borough, and says its centre has the densest housing in Elmbridge. The Heart, a mixed scheme of flats, shops and a library to the south-west of the High Street, rises to seven storeys, and the flats beside Wellington Close reach ten.
Walton's housing, from Winchester Road to Rydens
Much of the town grew in the 20th century. Winchester Road, laid out in the late 19th century, became the spine of the tight grid of streets around it. Ashley Park, south of the High Street, was the grounds of Ashley House, built in 1602 to 1607 and pulled down in 1929; half-acre plots were sold from 1930, and it is still a private estate of large detached houses with Ashley Road running through the middle. East of Sidney Road the building is interwar and post-war, and the estate south of Rydens Road, around Crofton Avenue and Shaldon Way, has one of the largest groups of bungalows and chalet-style houses in Elmbridge.
The 2021 Census shows how different the wards are. In Walton Central 39.0% of households lived in a purpose-built flat. Walton South had 27.9% in detached houses. Walton North had the most social renting, at 23.0%, the highest of any Elmbridge ward. Near Field Common, a large part of Oakbank Avenue has been rebuilt as a mix of flats and houses.
A flat in The Heart or off Station Avenue is likely to have a built-in single in a fitted kitchen. A large detached house in Ashley Park is more likely to have a double, a 90cm range or an AGA.

Morning permit bays in the Walton CPZ
Parking on Walton's roads is run by Surrey County Council, and the Walton controlled parking zone bays named in its 2024 Elmbridge review run on weekday mornings. In Ashley Park Road, Priory Close and Wynton Grove the bays were permit-only from 8am to 9.30am, then permit or a two-hour stay with no return within the hour until noon. In February 2026 the county decided to make them permit-only from 8am to noon, Monday to Friday, after residents said commuters and garage staff filled them for the day. The county says the new signs were in by mid-July 2026 and that completed schemes are enforced from 27 July. The county's decision report also notes that residents have turned down longer hours for the whole zone.
A visit booked for the afternoon avoids the permit hours. Elmbridge also runs car parks in Walton, among them Drewitts Court off Bridge Street and the Ashley Park car park off Ashley Park Avenue, where the first 30 minutes are free with a ticket. A space near the door matters more than the price of the bay.
