Ruislip Manor was open fields belonging to King's College, Cambridge, until George Ball bought 186 acres south of the railway; his Manor Homes estate went up between 1933 and 1939.

The council's local history notes describe Ball's houses as mainly small homes for working men who wanted to buy, and say a good number went to men from Tyneside and the north who had come to London for work. The little Metropolitan Railway halt of 1912 could not cope, and a new station was built in 1938. In 2021 Ruislip Manor ward was still a place of terraces (46.5% of households) and owners (77.5%).

Hayes grew earlier, and the council was one of the builders. Between 1919 and 1924 the council put up 766 houses at Botwell; by 1938 the number had risen to 1,213 dwellings around Botwell, and by May 1961 the council had built 2,426 houses and flats in Hayes. Post-war building was mainly north and east of Yeading. In Hayes Town ward in 2021, 41.5% of households lived in a purpose-built flat.

Across the borough, the semi-detached house was the commonest home in 2021 (35.1% of households), followed by purpose-built flats (26.2%), terraces (19.9%) and detached houses (13.9%). Detached houses cluster in the north: 36.7% in Ruislip ward and 32.4% in Ickenham and South Harefield.

Houses of the 1920s and 1930s were usually planned around a freestanding cooker, and some have since been refitted with built-in ovens, so tell us which you have. In 2021, 56.6% of Hillingdon households owned their home, 25.9% rented privately and 16.1% rented from the council or a housing association. Private renting runs highest in the south of the borough. In Heathrow Villages ward, which takes in Harlington, Harmondsworth, Sipson and Longford, 45.6% of households rented privately; in Hayes Town the share was 41.9%.

Permit bays and visitor vouchers in Hillingdon

Hillingdon's permit bays belong to its parking management schemes. The council's resident parking page says they usually operate from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, with the exact hours on the signs, and outside those hours anyone may use them. The first ten visitor vouchers per property are free, issued with the first visitor permit at the address, and the sessions are switched on online.

Some developments are shut out of this. Where a section 106 agreement restricts a development, its residents cannot get permits or visitor vouchers. If your block is one of these, say so when you book and we will plan where the van stops. A weekend visit (same price as a weekday) misses the permit hours.

Freestanding cooker or built-in oven?

A freestanding cooker has the oven, grill and hob in one unit that slides in between the cupboards. A built-in oven sits inside the kitchen units, with the hob set into the worktop. Both are cleaned the same way, with the door split where its design allows. The price follows the number and size of the ovens, so tell us what you have and, for a hob, whether it is gas (£28) or ceramic (£23).
