Spring Grove, W4 is a short street by Kew Bridge, and its terraces were laid out around 1850 across an old parish boundary. Hounslow's appraisal of the Strand on the Green conservation area, which takes it in, names one recent block there: four storeys of flats beside the old Star and Garter.
Strand on the Green, from Ship Cottage to Hearne Road
The conservation area was designated on 7 November 1968 and extended in 2001. The houses on the Strand face a riverside footpath that floods at spring tides; behind them runs Thames Road, once a narrow alley called Back Lane, which gave the houses a way in when the water came over. Ship Cottage, from 1694, is the oldest building on the Strand, and nos. 52 to 55 are a 1790s terrace in white Suffolk brick. Inland, Hearne, Waldeck and Pyrmont roads were planned in 1882, Hearne Road first, as modest terraces for people working in the riverside industries.
The war left its mark here too. On 21 September 1941 a parachute mine destroyed 41 houses in Thames Road and Magnolia Road and badly damaged 60 more.
For an oven clean the layout matters more than the age. The riverside houses face a footpath, so the way in is from the street at the back. Indoors, after dust sheets go down, the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand, while the racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately.
Flats and lets between the river and the railway
The census area that covers Spring Grove, Thames Road and the Strand (Hounslow 008D) had 841 households in 2021. Of those, 46.1% lived in a purpose-built flat, 26.4% in a terraced house and 15.9% in part of a converted or shared house; 40.3% rented privately and 52.1% owned. Strand on the Green's parking zone runs at weekends
Hounslow's parking map puts Spring Grove, Thames Road and the alleys off it in the Strand on the Green zone. Its hours are 10am to noon and 6pm to 8pm on weekdays, and 2pm to 4pm on Saturdays and Sundays. That leaves the early afternoon free on a weekday and the morning free at a weekend. The council says its map is guidance only, so the signs in the street decide.
