Oven cleaning in Richmond upon Thames

Richmond upon Thames is the only London borough that spans the Thames. Barnes, Mortlake, Kew and Richmond were in Surrey until 1965; the Twickenham side of the river was in Middlesex.

Richmond's housing, ward by ward

The 2021 Census counted about 80,700 households in the borough. Of those, 28.2% lived in a purpose-built block of flats, 26.6% in a terraced house, 25.0% in a semi and 8.3% in a detached house, while another 8.8% lived in a house split into flats. The wards differ a lot. In South Richmond and Twickenham Riverside almost one household in five (18.2% and 18.6%) lived in a converted house. In Heathfield, on the Whitton side, 55.4% lived in a semi. Hampton Wick and South Teddington had the most purpose-built flats, at 43.1%.

The council looks after 85 conservation areas, and two of them show the spread. Castelnau, in north Barnes, grew up along the road laid out in 1825 to the new Hammersmith toll bridge; its earliest houses are twenty pairs of classical villas, and Arundel Terrace has mansion flats of 1898. Parkleys, in Ham, is a 1954 to 1955 estate of flats and courtyard terraces by Span Developments, built for first-time buyers and now listed Grade II.

What that means for the oven is mostly a question of the kitchen. A flat cut out of a Victorian villa in Barnes or Twickenham tends to have a narrow kitchen and a built-in single. Semis are 48.7% of households in Whitton ward and 28.1% in East Sheen, and a family semi may have a double. Detached houses are commonest in Hampton ward (17.9%), and a larger house is where a 90cm range or an AGA is more likely. The Span flats at Ham and the mansion blocks by the river mean stairs.

In a zone that only runs for two hours in the morning, a visit that starts after the window needs no permit. In the all-day zones the van needs a paid bay or one of your visitor permits. When Twickenham Stadium expects a big crowd, the council adds a one-day zone round the ground, Zone R, from 11am to 11pm, and it posts the fixture list ahead. The council also warns that hours can change for local events, so check the plate at the end of your road and tell us the zone letter when you book.

When a Richmond tenancy ends

In 2021, 62.4% of Richmond's households owned their home, 24.7% rented privately and 12.1% rented from a social landlord. Only 2.3% rented from the council itself; most social tenants rent from housing associations such as RHP, formed in 2000, which now owns or manages over 11,000 homes across five boroughs. Private renting ran highest in Twickenham Riverside ward (36.9%) and South Richmond (35.4%).

Dust sheets go down first. Racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately. In the kitchen, the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand, and the door is split where its design allows. A single takes about 90 minutes and a double about two hours. Then the oven is rebuilt and heated, and you look inside before anything is packed away.

Do you cover both sides of the river?

Can you come on a match day at Twickenham?
