In 1925 Lionel de Rothschild sold the last 199 acres of the Gunnersbury estate to Ealing and Acton councils, 186 acres for a park and 13 for housing. The park opened in May 1926. It now covers 72 hectares of Grade II* listed parkland, run for Ealing and Hounslow councils together, and its satnav postcode, W3 8LQ, belongs to the main car park.
Homes on the edge of the park
The park has no streets of houses inside it; the kitchens are round its rim. The Victoria County History records that Brentford's council, which had wanted to build on the park, put up 118 houses in Lionel Road in 1928 and 1929. Lionel Road North is where the park has its southern entrance today.
Across the North Circular from the park's east side is the Gunnersbury Park Estate, with The Ridgeway, Princes Avenue and Ridgeway Drive at its heart. George Edward Cooper bought this triangle of land, left over from the Underground works, from Lionel de Rothschild and planned the roads before building anything. The first houses went up on Gunnersbury Lane in 1926, Park Drive followed in 1928 and Manor Gardens in 1931: two-storey short terraces and semis, many half-timbered, with service lanes and garages behind. Hounslow put the estate in its Gunnersbury Park conservation area in 1990, and an Article 4 direction protects its original features.
The census area covering The Ridgeway and Princes Avenue (Hounslow 029B) was 52.4% terraced houses and 20.8% semis in 2021, with 12.6% of homes part of a converted or shared house. In a 1920s terrace the kitchen is usually at the back, and the cooker may be a built-in double or a freestanding one.
The house type does not change the work. Racks, trays, side runners and fan cover come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, while the cavity and door glass are degreased by hand indoors. Dust sheets go down before anything comes apart.

The same census area had 38.9% of households renting privately in 2021, against 59.0% who owned and 1.7% in social housing. The streets round the park belong to two councils with their own zones:
- Ealing, Popes Lane and other W5 roads by the park
- Zone GP, Gunnersbury Park: 9am to 10am and 2pm to 3pm, Monday to Friday
- Ealing, Gunnersbury Crescent, Gunnersbury Gardens and Park Parade
- Zone J, Acton Town: 9am to 10am and 3pm to 4pm, Monday to Friday
- Hounslow, The Ridgeway, Princes Avenue and Ridgeway Drive
- Zone GE, Gunnersbury Estate: 9.30am to 11.30am and 3.30pm to 5.30pm, Monday to Friday
Both councils say the signs on the street are what count; Hounslow calls its zone map guidance only. The park's own car parks charge at all times, bank holidays included, so a bay in your street is what we look for; tell us the road when you call.
