The Grand Junction Canal, cut along the line of the River Brent, opened to the Thames at Brentford in 1800 and brought coal and iron through the town; industry spread along its banks and the riverside.
Brentford Lock West, beside the canal
One stretch of that canal-side land, old warehouses and brownfield, is now Brentford Lock West, where work on site began in 2012. The Canal & River Trust says the second phase, 157 homes, was finished in late 2018. The developer, Waterside Places, plans a final phase of 452 homes, and a new footbridge across the canal was lifted into place in April 2023 as part of the enabling work.

The Butts, north of the High Street
The Butts is older by three centuries. Hounslow's appraisal says William Parish, landlord of the Red Lion Inn, began developing the square from around 1690, and from 1701 it was the scene of the notoriously riotous Middlesex elections. The houses are mostly brown brick with red brick dressings and sash windows, and many have basements and attics. Hounslow made it a conservation area on 7 November 1968. Just south of the canal flats, round Field Lane and Hornbeam Crescent (Hounslow 006E), the census shows mostly social housing: 51.0% of households rented from the council or a housing association in 2021, and 32.0% lived in semis and 29.4% in terraced houses. Elsewhere in Brentford, the railhead was redeveloped in 1978 to 1980 as 590 homes built around a marina.

Where the van parks in Brentford
Hounslow's parking map shows no council zone across Brentford Lock West, so ask your managing agent or concierge where a visiting van can stop. Field Lane and Brickfield Close are in the Brentford West area zone, controlled 9.30am to 6pm every day of the week, Sunday included. Round The Butts the zone runs 8am to 6.30pm, Monday to Saturday. The council says its map is guidance and the street signs decide.

Very satisfied with the service. They were slightly late at first but I got a call from customer service to let me know, and it was all fine. The oven man, as he called himself, arrived and worked very hard for a couple of hours. My oven now looks like it has never been used.
