By 1830 there were 42,000 barrels of gunpowder stored here. The Board of Ordnance had put a depot alongside the Grand Junction Canal during the Napoleonic Wars, starting work in 1813 and taking four years over it, with barracks for three officers and fifty soldiers, and the whole thing shut in 1831. The Hanwell Loop branch that brought the powder barges to the magazine door stayed in use into the 1880s, then was filled in.
A name that may have been a tax dodge
North Hyde means something like north land, a hide being the Saxon measure of ground reckoned enough to keep one household. One account has it named by a Saxon landowner keen not to pay Heston's parish dues, though nobody has proved that. The barracks became St Mary's Orphanage in 1842, later an Industrial School, and closed in 1934. Convent Way still carries the memory.
Big semis mean big cookers
The area sits in the London Borough of Hounslow, hemmed by the Grand Union Canal mainline to the north and the M4 to the south, and the housing is mostly large semi-detached suburban stock, with Convent Way running to mixed heights and the Airlinks golf course on the edge. Kitchens in a big semi tend to be the ones that took a 90cm range when the family extended, and a range is a different afternoon from an integrated single. A 90cm range cooker is £114.
