Bedford Park sits in two boroughs. Ealing made its western part a conservation area in 1969, and Hounslow followed for the eastern part on 16 April 1970; the line runs along Woodstock Road, with its west side and The Avenue in Ealing, and Bath Road, Priory Avenue and Priory Gardens in Hounslow.
Listed houses, and flats inside them
The buildings surviving from the original suburb were listed in 1967, most of them at Grade II. Hounslow's appraisal describes how they were built: around thirty house designs, red brick and tile in the Queen Anne manner, front gardens behind wooden fences, and no basements at all. The building ran in phases from 1875 to 1886 under Jonathan Carr, and the plots grew larger after 1880, when Shaw's pupil E. J. May took over the designs.
Many of those houses are now divided. In the census area that covers Bath Road, Priory Avenue and Flanders Road (Hounslow 001C), 34.3% of the 638 households in 2021 lived in part of a converted or shared house, 33.5% in a semi and 16.1% in a terrace. The appraisal notes the opposite pressure too: flats being turned back into single houses, and interior walls taken out to make larger rooms. A knocked-through kitchen in a whole house may have room for a 90cm range; a flat on an upper floor may have a smaller kitchen with a built-in single.
Listing covers the inside of these houses as well as the front, so the method matters. Dust sheets go down first. The racks, trays, side runners and fan cover come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity and door glass are degreased by hand.
