At the 2021 Census, 22.8% of Haringey's households lived in part of a converted or shared house. In Stroud Green ward the share was 50.3%, so half of all homes there were flats or rooms inside a house that has since been divided.

Across the borough, 35.4% of households lived in a purpose-built block of flats and 25.6% in a terraced house; just 3.9% had a detached house. After Stroud Green, conversions were commonest in Harringay ward (37.7%), Crouch End (34.1%) and Muswell Hill (32.6%). In Northumberland Park, in Tottenham, 51.1% of households lived in a purpose-built block.

Two of the big estates are well over a century old. Noel Park was opened in August 1883 by the Artizans, Labourers and General Dwellings Company, which built around 2,200 houses there in five classes; most of it became a conservation area in 1982. The London County Council built the Tower Gardens estate in Tottenham between 1904 and 1928, 2,230 Arts and Crafts cottages, a conservation area since 1978. Broadwater Farm came much later: begun in 1967, it had 1,063 flats in 12 linked blocks, and after safety tests in 2018 the council decided to demolish the Tangmere and Northolt blocks.

Conversions shape the job in much of the borough. A flat at the top of a divided Victorian house is usually reached by a narrow shared stair. The racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately. Indoors, the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand, and the door comes apart where its design allows. Tell us the floor when you call.

Prices are fixed on the phone before the visit and weekends cost the same as weekdays. No call-out fee inside the North and South Circular; outside it, any travel charge is quoted on the phone before you book.

One fixed price per appliance, agreed on the phone. A range cooker clean in a large Muswell Hill kitchen is £143 for the 90cm size and takes two to three hours.

Parking zones from Wood Green to Tower Gardens

Haringey's list runs to more than 40 controlled zones, and the hours differ widely. Four from the council's list:

Around the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium there are event-day zones as well, controlled on match and event days only, from 5pm to 8.30pm on weekdays and noon to 8pm at weekends; other Tottenham zones, Tower Gardens among them, run longer on event days. Parking is free outside a zone's hours, and on bank holidays unless an event is on. In a two-hour zone like Crouch End A a visit can start after noon and avoid the question; Wood Green Inner is controlled from 8am to 10pm every day, so the van needs a visitor permit or a paid bay. The council's list of all zones gives every set of hours.

Renting in Haringey

Only 37.2% of Haringey households owned their home in 2021. Private tenants were almost as many, 35.6%, and 25.2% rented from the council or a housing association. In Harringay ward half of all households (50.2%) had a private landlord. Social renting was highest in Northumberland Park (41.3%) and Bruce Castle (40.2%), both in Tottenham.

Those tenancies end with an inventory, and the oven is on the clerk's list. Agents can ask for the invoice in the agency's name and photos for the checkout file, and keys for an empty flat can be collected by arrangement.

Yes. Zones near the stadium run longer on event days: the event-day-only zones start at 5pm on weekdays and noon at weekends, and Tower Gardens runs to 8.30pm on weekdays. Give us the date and the street when you book.

Do you work on Sundays in Muswell Hill?

Yes, seven days a week at the weekday price. The Muswell Hill zone runs every day from 11am to 1pm, Sunday included, so a visit that overlaps those two hours needs a visitor permit for the van.

My kitchen is on the top floor of a converted house in Stroud Green. Is that a problem?

No. A built-in single still takes about 90 minutes.
