In Brownswood ward, 39.9% of households lived in part of a converted or shared house at the 2021 Census, more than in any other Hackney ward. Across the borough the share was 15.5%, and 60.4% of households lived in purpose-built blocks of flats.

Whole houses are the exception here. In 2021 only 18.9% of Hackney households had a house to themselves (terraced, semi-detached or detached), and the ward figures swing a long way: 36.2% in Stoke Newington ward, 3.7% in Hoxton West, where 87.2% lived in purpose-built flats.

The council has designated 35 conservation areas, starting in 1969 with Clapton Square, Clapton Common, Clapton Pond and Clissold Park. De Beauvoir Town has some of the oldest planned streets: the north side of De Beauvoir Square, a run of Jacobean-style pairs with shaped gables over basements, dates from 1839. In the east of the borough the London County Council took part of Hackney Marsh in 1937 for the Kingsmead estate, 17 five-storey blocks with a school and shops. Near Manor House, the 2,000-home Woodberry Down estate is being rebuilt over 20 years as more than 5,500 new homes.

Each kind of home makes a slightly different visit. A flat carved out of a Victorian house in Stoke Newington or Clapton often has its kitchen in a former back room, with a freestanding cooker in whatever gap was left. Estate flats usually have a single oven, built in or freestanding. New-build flats usually come with an integrated oven and a separate hob. On a top floor with no lift the price stays the same; mention the floor when you call.

Whatever the type, the method is the same. Dust sheets go down first. The racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand indoors. Where the door's design allows, it is split and the glass cleaned between the panes.

Parking hours in Hackney's zones

Most of Hackney is divided into lettered parking zones, and the hours on the council's zone list are far apart. Four examples:

• Stamford Hill (T), Stamford Hill West (W) and Stamford Hill East (Y): 10am to midday, Monday to Friday
• Rectory Road (R): 7am to 11am, Monday to Friday
• Hackney Central (D, apart from its Central and South part): 8.30am to 11pm, Monday to Saturday
• North Shoreditch (B): 8.30am to midnight, Monday to Saturday

Three zones near the Olympic Park (Hackney Wick K, Homerton and Lower Clapton N, Well Street Q) run extended hours on park event days, and Brownswood and Manor House (G), Finsbury Park (G2) and Clissold (M) do the same when there is an event at the Emirates Stadium. In a short-hours zone the visit can start after the controlled window ends. In the all-day zones the van needs a paid bay or a visitor voucher, so tell us your zone letter and street when you book. Hackney tenancies and the checkout oven

In 2021, 40.5% of Hackney households rented from the council or a housing association, split almost evenly between the two. Another 32.2% rented privately (34,147 households, against 29,449 in 2011), and 24.6% owned their home.

Can the visit avoid the Stamford Hill parking hours?

Usually. Zones T, W and Y are controlled only from 10am to midday on weekdays, so a booking that starts at noon needs no permit. Saturday and Sunday visits cost the same as weekdays.

Does an event at the Olympic Park or the Emirates matter?

It can. Six Hackney zones run longer hours on event days. Tell us the date and your zone and we will pick a time that leaves room for the van.

How long will a range cooker in a Victorian kitchen take?

Two to three hours for a 90cm range. If the range hob or the hood above it needs doing too, that is £48 on the same visit.

What do you need from me on the day?
