West Green was recorded by name in 1384, a green halfway along the lane from Tottenham High Road to Green Lanes, and in 1619 its eight buildings were the only hamlet among the farms in the middle of Tottenham parish.
From hamlet to terraces on West Green Road
It stayed small for a long time: about half a dozen houses in 1800 and some 18 in 1840, a few of them family houses of some standing. The novelist Mrs J. H. Riddell lived there in 1859 and thought it might have been a hundred miles from London.
Building began in the 1850s. Clyde Road, parallel with Philip Lane, was 36 acres of meadow offered for building in 1851, and terraces went up on Summerhill Road, which joins Philip Lane to West Green Road, in 1856 and 1859. By 1875 Mrs Riddell found the old village 'huddled up against Streets, and Villas', and a Great Eastern line through West Green followed in 1878. A gap where Philip Lane meets West Green Road was filled between the wars by Mansfield Avenue and the roads to its west. Downhills Park and the streets around it
In 1800 the largest park in Tottenham lay north of the village, on the Downhills estate, whose big Georgian house was built before 1728. The British Land Company bought Downhills in 1881, and in 1901 Tottenham Urban District Council bought the land and grounds. They are now Downhills Park, 12 hectares, with a recreation ground on the western side and formal gardens, including the Italian Gardens, on the eastern side.
West Green ward (2022 boundaries) runs north from West Green Road past the park. At the 2021 Census it had 5,849 households: 36.5% owned their home, almost half of those outright, 35.1% rented privately and 26.5% rented from the council or a housing association. 31.9% lived in a terraced house and 21.8% in part of a converted or shared house. That mix gives two kinds of kitchen, the full-width kitchen of a whole house, which may hold a built-in double or a range, and the smaller kitchen of a divided house, usually with a single or a freestanding cooker.
Either way the oven is stripped first. Racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, while the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand indoors. Dust sheets cover the floor, and the door is split where its design allows.

Five parking zones meet near West Green
On the council's zone map the hours change from one side street to the next. Carlingford Road, Stanley Road and most of Belmont Road are in the Wood Green Outer zone, Monday to Saturday from 8am to 6.30pm. Black Boy Lane is in Green Lanes B, Monday to Friday from 8am to 6.30pm. Summerhill Road and Mansfield Avenue are in the St Ann's zone, Monday to Saturday from 8am to 6.30pm. Downhills Park Road starts in the Wood Green Outer zone, crosses the Belmont zone (weekdays 8am to 6.30pm) and then runs east into Bruce Grove West, where the only controlled hours are 2pm to 4pm on weekdays.

Along its eastern half, in Bruce Grove West, the zone only runs from 2pm to 4pm on weekdays, so a morning or weekend visit misses it. The western end is in the Wood Green Outer zone, controlled Monday to Saturday from 8am to 6.30pm.
Do you come out at weekends?
Yes, seven days a week, and a Saturday or Sunday visit costs the same as a weekday one.
