Hillfield Avenue climbs south from Hornsey High Street, and it went up in one go: it was built on the rector's glebe between 1894 and 1905, and 138 of its houses were designed by the local architect and surveyor John Farrer.

Until the 1890s this hill was part of Hornsey Glebe, 48 acres of grazing owned by the rector, who held out against building. The council's 2009 draft appraisal of the Hillfield conservation area, designated in 1994, describes two-storey red brick terraces with an attic floor: Dutch gables at the High Street end, hipped dormers further up, and bigger semi-detached houses on the crest by Harold Road. The hill is steep enough that most houses in the run from No. 62 to No. 118 have basement extensions.
In a house like this the kitchen is usually at the back of the ground floor, or a level down where a basement has been dug out. The routine does not change. Racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately. Inside, on dust sheets, the cavity, the fan cover and the door glass are degreased by hand, and the door is split where its design allows.
Council homes either side of the High Street
Hornsey's urban district council built its first working-class housing here. It acquired Campsbourne, a field by Nightingale Lane, in 1897, and by 1899 had put up 108 terraced cottages in Northview and Southview roads and on the lane itself; a second scheme of 140 cottages in Hawthorne and Beechwood roads followed in 1904. South of the High Street, 21 acres of older houses were bought compulsorily in 1963, cleared, and rebuilt as 267 houses in yellow-brick three-storey terraces across the hill, with Lightfoot Road extended north along the old line of Westfield Road.
The 2021 Census figures are for the whole ward. Hornsey ward (2022 boundaries) had 6,704 households: 41.5% owned their home, 29.9% rented privately and 25.7% rented from the council or a housing association. Some 40.7% lived in a purpose-built block of flats and 25.8% in part of a converted or shared house.

Parking in Hornsey's two-hour and four-hour zones
On Haringey's zone map, most of Hillfield Avenue, Harold Road and Lightfoot Road is in the Hornsey South zone, controlled from 11am to 1pm on weekdays. Most of Campsbourne Road and Nightingale Lane, north of the High Street, is in Hornsey North East, controlled from 10am to 2pm on weekdays. Rokesly Avenue and Hermiston Avenue, to the south-west, mostly fall in Crouch End A, 10am to noon, and the southern tip of Hillfield Avenue does too. The council's list of zone hours shows none of the three running at weekends, and all are free on bank holidays; zone edges cut across some of these streets, so the signs on your street are the final word. Very satisfied with the service. They were slightly late at first but I got a call from customer service to let me know, and it was all fine. The oven man, as he called himself, arrived and worked very hard for a couple of hours. My oven now looks like it has never been used.
Nice hardworking lads that always do a good job. We used them for our old flat when moving out and for the new one now, both jobs were done very professionally. My wife is very impressed with the results and would recommend them to friends and family.
