Crouch End's clock tower went up in a matter of months in 1895, where the Broadway splits into Park Road and Tottenham Lane. It is a memorial of red brick, stone and terracotta to Henry Reader Williams, who chaired Hornsey's local authority from 1880 to 1894, and it was unveiled on 23 June that year.
The parades round the clock tower
The tower stands in front of where Topsfield Hall used to be. When Sarah Elder's estate was sold in 1894, the builders Edmondsons bought the hall, pulled it down, laid out Rosebery Gardens and the rest of Elder Avenue, and put up substantial terraces, with a four-storey parade of shops on the Tottenham Lane corner. Across the road J. C. Hill built a similar parade and ran Felix Avenue and Fairfield Gardens through the long back gardens of the houses he replaced. By 1926 Crouch End was the main shopping centre for a wide area, and in 1935 Hornsey's new town hall opened there.
Terraces went up on the old Elder estate land after the 1894 sale, and many homes in the ward are now divided. In Crouch End ward (2022 boundaries) at the 2021 Census, 34.1% of households lived in a converted or shared house, 36.5% in a purpose-built block and 16.5% in a terraced house of their own.
Mansion flats and council blocks off Park Road
Park Road is older than the parades: it already had 156 houses in 1856. The flats came later. Ravensdale Mansions, three blocks of 47 flats in Haringey Park, replaced a single house from 1908, and Oakfield Court, 58 flats, was up by 1937. After the war the council added Clemence Court on Lynton Road in 1951, Ramsey Court and Veryan Court facing Park Road in 1952 and 1953, and Truro and Buckley courts on Palace Road. The Grove, on the north side of Lynton Road, was cleared in 1969 and rebuilt as small red-brick blocks.
Mansion blocks of that date were often built without lifts, which means stairs. The racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen, on dust sheets.

Of Crouch End ward's 6,086 households in 2021, 35.7% rented privately, 13.3% rented from the council or a housing association and 48.6% owned. Crouch End A and B: two hours each, at opposite ends of the day
On Haringey's zone map, Crouch Hall Road is in Crouch End B, controlled from 2pm to 4pm on weekdays. Lynton Road, Palace Road, Rosebery Gardens and Haringey Park are in Crouch End A, 10am to noon. The Broadway and Park Road have addresses in both zones, so check the sign on your side of the street. The council's list shows both free at weekends, on bank holidays and outside their two hours. On a B street a morning visit falls outside the controlled hours; on an A street an afternoon one does.
