Page Green was on record by 1348, a green running east from the High Road along Broad Lane towards a crossing of the Lea, and the Page family, first named in 1319, still held land there in 1395. A ring of seven elms on Page Green Common gave Seven Sisters its name; seven hornbeams grow on the spot today.
Tall houses on Page Green Terrace
The common and the houses facing it have been in Haringey's Seven Sisters/Page Green conservation area since 1998. South of Earlsmead Road, a long residential frontage has its own access road, Page Green Terrace, set back from the High Road behind a tree-planted verge. The council's appraisal calls Nos. 170 to 180 High Road, terraced houses of three storeys with bay windows in stock or red brick, the most complete stretch of late 19th-century housing on this part of the High Road. Nos. 162 to 166 stand over a semi-basement with a flight of steps to the front door, and No. 182 is an early 20th-century block of flats.
In a house of that height the kitchen can be down in the basement or two floors up. The routine is the same on any floor. Dust sheets go down, then the racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, while the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand indoors. Steps add minutes to the visit; the price is still the one agreed on the phone.
The streets east of Page Green
The side streets came early. By 1863 Stamford Road and Markfield Road had been laid out east of Page Green, where 84 small building plots had been offered for sale about ten years before. Markfield House went for building with 80 acres in 1879, the Rows' house at Page Green followed with 11½ acres in 1880, and the Hurst, the last large house on the green, was auctioned in 1893. In 1974 houses had been cleared in patches on both sides of Broad Lane for council rebuilding. At the far end of Markfield Road the Victorian pumping station, listed Grade II, still holds its 100 horsepower beam engine of 1888.
For South Tottenham ward (2022 boundaries), the 2021 Census counted 5,441 households. 43.4% lived in a purpose-built block of flats, 26.9% in a terraced house and 14.0% in part of a converted house. 40.2% rented privately, 30.6% rented from the council or a housing association, and 26.1% owned their home.

Three parking zones east of the High Road
On Haringey's zone map, Page Green Terrace, Tynemouth Road, Stamford Road, Norman Road, Harold Road and Ashby Road are all in the Seven Sisters zone, controlled Monday to Saturday from 8am to 6.30pm. Markfield Road is split between that zone and the South Tottenham zone, which covers the stretch by the pumping station, so check the sign there. Crowland Road and the streets south of it are in the much lighter South Tottenham zone, controlled only from 10am to noon on weekdays; those streets are on the Stamford Hill page. Around Erskine Crescent and Montrose Walk, the Jarrow Road zone runs Monday to Saturday, 8am to 6.30pm. The council's list of zone hours says parking is free outside those hours and on bank holidays, so a Sunday visit avoids them all, at the weekday price. Is my street in the Seven Sisters zone or the South Tottenham zone?
North of Crowland Road, from Page Green Terrace across to Ashby Road, it is the Seven Sisters zone, Monday to Saturday. Crowland Road and the roads south of it are in the South Tottenham zone, weekdays 10am to noon only. Markfield Road is in both. The sign on your street settles it.
Can you clean the extractor hood at the same visit?
Yes. An extractor is £28 on top of the oven price, and a single oven with its hob and extractor together is £117.
The flat is empty between tenants. Do I need to be there?
Not if a key pick-up is arranged first. Landlords and agents can arrange one for an empty property, and photos for the checkout file are available on request.
