Until the 19th century most of Tottenham's people lived along one road, the old village street, now Tottenham High Road, which the Victoria County History says presumably followed a Roman road. Growth came in 1872 with the Great Eastern line, which came to run from Liverpool Street to Enfield, and its cheap early-morning tickets to London; the parish grew from 22,869 people in 1871 to 97,174 in 1891.

Parts of the road had been rebuilt piecemeal long before that: almshouses and villas went in the 1920s and 1930s, with the Sanchez House parade built in 1923 and a large stand at the football ground in 1934. In 1976 the Victoria County History noted a few late-18th- and early-19th-century buildings still showing above modern shop fronts. Some upper floors are homes: at the 2021 Census, 548 households in the nine wards listed below, added together, lived in a commercial building, such as a flat over a shop. A flat like that is reached by the street door and the stairs; the High Road past Tottenham Green is the A10, and the team needs somewhere to park.
Housing across the N15 and N17 wards
Nine Haringey wards (2022 boundaries) cover most of N15 and N17: Bruce Castle, Northumberland Park, Seven Sisters, South Tottenham, St Ann's, Tottenham Central, Tottenham Hale, West Green and White Hart Lane. Added together they had 44,719 households at the 2021 Census, and the percentages in this section are sums across those nine wards. 35.3% rented privately, 33.2% rented from the council or a housing association and 28.9% owned; 39.1% lived in a purpose-built block of flats and 29.0% in a terraced house.
The wards differ sharply. Purpose-built flats ran from 19.1% of households in White Hart Lane ward, with its London County Council estates, to 51.8% in Tottenham Hale, and private renting from 24.1% in White Hart Lane to 41.8% in Tottenham Central, which takes in Tottenham Green and Bruce Grove.

Love Lane and the streets by White Hart Lane station
In the mid 1860s Tottenham's housing was densest at the north end, in small terraced houses off the High Road south of White Hart Lane: William, Moselle and Whitehall streets, Love Lane and Church Road. Much of the ground between the High Road and the railway there is covered by the council's High Road West scheme, which includes the Love Lane estate. Love Lane residents backed it in a September 2021 ballot, 55.7% in favour, and on 14 July 2026 the Cabinet gave the go-ahead to appoint a contractor for the first 61 council homes, with building to start in autumn 2026 and the phase due to finish in 2028.
