In 1896 the builder James Edmondson bought The Limes and Fortis House, two estates at the centre of the old village, and started the shops and family houses that became Muswell Hill Broadway.
An Edwardian suburb built in under 20 years
Haringey's appraisal of the Muswell Hill conservation area, designated on 1 March 1974, calls it an essentially Edwardian suburb, most of it built between 1896 and 1913. Edmondson's three-storey parades came first, with shops on the ground floor and flats above. Prince's Avenue and Queens Avenue followed, then Hillfield Park at the end of the 1890s, and south of Muswell Road he built Wellfield, Elms and Dukes avenues, leaving a path between Nos. 26 and 28 Dukes Avenue down to the station. Woodberry Crescent went up on the North Lodge estate between 1906 and 1910. Muswell Road itself is older, laid out in 1885 when parkland was sold off.
Many of those houses have since been divided. In Muswell Hill ward, 32.6% of the 3,812 households lived in a flat or bedsit inside a converted house at the 2021 Census, more than in purpose-built flats (26.2%) or terraced houses (20.3%). 55.4% owned their home and 35.9% rented privately.
So the kitchens vary from a flat over a Broadway shop, up a flight of stairs, to a whole family house with room for a double oven or a 90cm range. The job is the same in both: racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen, after dust sheets go down.

Muswell Hill's parking zones
Haringey's zone map splits the streets round the Broadway. Queens Avenue and Kings Avenue are in Muswell Hill West, controlled Monday to Friday from 10am to 2pm. A small Muswell Hill zone by Woodberry Crescent runs every day, Sunday included, from 11am to 1pm. Further east, sample postcodes on Elms Avenue, Dukes Avenue, Hillfield Park and Muswell Road fall in no zone on the map, so check the signs on your street. The council's list of zone hours says parking is free outside the controlled times. The streets round Grand Avenue, towards Fortis Green, are in a different zone again.

Can you come on a Sunday?
Yes, at the weekday price. Near Woodberry Crescent the zone still runs from 11am to 1pm on Sundays; on Queens Avenue and Kings Avenue there are no controls at weekends.
Our flat is on the second floor of a converted house. Is that a problem?
No. Mention the floor when you call.
Where is the oven cleaned?
The racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately. The cavity and door glass are cleaned by hand, normally in your kitchen. Some teams have a heated tank on the van and use it when they can park close; otherwise everything is done in the kitchen. The price is the same either way, and you can ask when you book.
How long does a double oven take?
About 2 hours. A single takes about 90 minutes.

Very satisfied with the service. They were slightly late at first but I got a call from customer service to let me know, and it was all fine. The oven man, as he called himself, arrived and worked very hard for a couple of hours. My oven now looks like it has never been used.
Arrived promptly and did a great job cleaning the oven, hob and extractor. They look like new now and for a very reasonable price too.
Nice hardworking lads that always do a good job. We used them for our old flat when moving out and for the new one now, both jobs were done very professionally. My wife is very impressed with the results and would recommend them to friends and family.
