Bruce Grove takes its name from Bruce Castle. The tree-lined walk up to the mansion, once called George and Vulture Walk, became the Grove, and the house itself, then known as Lordship House, was renamed in the late 1600s by the 2nd Lord Coleraine, who had found that the manor once belonged to Robert the Bruce.
The Georgian row on Bruce Grove
Nos. 1 to 16, a row of Georgian houses in pairs, were built between 1789 and 1820, many of them occupied by prominent Quaker families, and all sixteen are listed Grade II: Tottenham's largest group of listed buildings. Luke Howard, who gave clouds their names, died at No. 7, which has Tottenham's only English Heritage blue plaque. At the top of the Grove, across from Bruce Castle, the almshouses the Drapers' Company built in 1869, most of them for Edmanson's charity for sailmakers, survive as Edmanson's Close after local people stepped in when demolition was suggested in the 1970s. Bruce Castle, a Grade I manor house open as a museum since 1906, stands in 8 hectares of park at the far end of the Grove.
A listed house makes no difference to the price or the method. Everything removable comes out and is soaked and cleaned separately; the cavity, fan cover and door glass are hand-degreased on dust sheets, and the door is split where its design allows.
Victorian streets behind the Grove
The streets behind the Grove came later. William Salte's house, empty by 1870, made way for Ruskin, Cedar and Pembury roads; Bruce Castle Road and Birkbeck Road followed on land auctioned with Fair Lawn in 1875, and The Avenue was built from Bruce Grove, where Elmhurst was the first of the old houses to disappear, in 1896.

In the census area (MSOA) that the House of Commons Library calls Bruce Grove North, which takes in the Grove and the streets off it towards the High Road, 28.5% of households in 2021 lived in part of a converted or shared house and 40.8% rented privately.
