Abyssinia, a small settlement built up from the late 1860s in what became known as Hornsey Vale, is said to have stood in the grounds of a house of that name facing Tottenham Lane. By 1880 its seven roads held more than 200 terraced houses; within a hundred years every one had gone, and the Hornsey School for Girls moved into a new building on the site, on Inderwick Road, in 1971.
Where the name Hornsey Vale applies now
The name outlived the houses and drifted. A Hornsey Historical Society member, born in 1955 just after his parents moved into the flat above a grocer's at 96 Weston Park, remembers the area off Inderwick Road as Hornsey Vale. The House of Commons Library gives the name to a census area, Haringey 028, which takes in the eastern end of Weston Park, Inderwick Road, Ridge Road and Hillfield Avenue. Big semis west of Ferme Park Road, terraces east
Ferme Park Road was laid across the old Farnfields manor, from Tottenham Lane over the ridge to Stapleton Hall Road, by 1880. West of it, between the road and the Elder estate, large semi-detached houses in Elder Avenue and Weston Park were ready in 1889, and Weston Park and Cecile Park were both planned by J. Farrer, the Elder family's architect. East of it the houses were cheaper. The eastern end of Weston Park and the whole of Ridge Road and Oakworth Road (later Nelson Road) were built by 1884, and J. C. Hill planned 257 houses in Rathcoole Avenue, Rathcoole Gardens, Harvey Road and Uplands Road; the ones he built were terraced and cheaper than those on the Elder estate. In 1888 Ferme Park's commuters of moderate means were contrasted with the richer residents of Shepherd's Hill.
The 2021 Census figures are for the census area Haringey 028 (a middle-layer super output area, the House of Commons Library's Hornsey Vale), which covers the eastern streets and Hillfield Avenue; Elder Avenue and western Weston Park are in the next area, Haringey 034. Haringey 028 had 2,983 households: 47.3% lived in part of a converted or shared house and 22.5% in a terraced house; 47.2% owned their home, 26.3% rented privately and 25.5% rented from the council or a housing association. The council added 138 dwellings at Chettle Court on Ridge Road in 1969.
The two halves give two kinds of kitchen. A flat on the upper floor of a divided terrace off Nelson Road usually has a compact kitchen with a built-in single. A whole semi on Elder Avenue, with the back knocked through, can have room for a 90cm range.

Three parking zones, two hours each
Haringey's zone boundaries meet here, and their hours are staggered. On the council's zone map, Elder Avenue, most of Ferme Park Road and the western end of Weston Park are in Crouch End A, controlled from 10am to noon. The eastern end of Weston Park, Inderwick Road, Nelson Road, Mayfield Road and Ridge Road are in the Stroud Green zone, noon to 2pm. Rathcoole Avenue and Rathcoole Gardens are in Hornsey South, 11am to 1pm. All three run on weekdays only, and the council's list shows each free outside its two hours and on bank holidays. Between them they cover 10am to 2pm, so tell us the street when you book.

Usually. None of the three zones is controlled on Saturday or Sunday, and weekends cost the weekday price.
How long does a two-oven AGA take?
About half a day. A two-oven AGA is £143, and it has to be switched off the night before so it is cool when we arrive.
My flat is on the top floor off Nelson Road. What should I tell you?
The floor and whether there is a lift. The price is set by the appliance and agreed on the phone before the visit.
Do you do the extractor hood at the same visit?
Yes. A hood is £28 added to the oven, or £117 for a single oven, hob and hood together.
