From the Boundary Estate to Marsh Wall

Flats have been built here for a long time. The Boundary Estate, on the Shoreditch edge of Bethnal Green, was opened by the Prince of Wales in 1900: five-storey tenement blocks with 1,069 homes, which the London Archives call the world's first council housing estate. In Poplar, the Lansbury estate was the Festival of Britain's Live Architecture Exhibition from 3 May to 28 September 1951, with a terraced house at 14 Grundy Street furnished as a show home. On Marsh Wall, Landmark Pinnacle is billed as the tallest residential tower in the UK.

Older houses survive in pockets. In Spitalfields, the Fournier Street houses went up under building leases granted between 1725 and 1728. In Bow West ward, 29.1% of households lived in a whole house in 2021, the highest share in the borough. Along the river, Wapping made homes out of its warehouses: Oliver's Wharf, built in 1870 to store tea, was converted into flats in 1972. By 2021, 11.7% of households in St Katharine's and Wapping ward lived in a converted building that was never a house, such as a warehouse, school or church.

For the oven, a tower flat on the Isle of Dogs and a terrace in Bow are different jobs. The tower kitchen is usually an open-plan run with an integrated single, sometimes pyrolytic. An older walk-up estate flat may have a freestanding cooker and four flights of stairs, and a Victorian house can have a range in a knocked-through kitchen.

Pyrolytic self-clean or a hand clean?

The oven locks its door and heats far above cooking temperature, burning food residue to a fine ash that is wiped out afterwards. The manual says which racks and side runners to take out first.
Professional clean
Racks, runners and trays come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, while the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand. The door is split where its design allows.

Prices are fixed on the phone before the visit and weekends cost the same as weekdays. No call-out fee inside the North and South Circular; outside it, any travel charge is quoted on the phone before you book.

The price depends only on the appliance (a single, a double, a 90cm range or an AGA) and is fixed when you ring, whatever floor the flat is on.

Parking zones A to D in Tower Hamlets

The council splits the borough into four parent zones, each with numbered sub-zones: A around Bethnal Green, B around Bow, C around Shadwell and Stepney, and D around Poplar and Crossharbour. On the council's zone page, last updated in February 2023, most sub-zones are controlled from 8.30am to 5.30pm, Monday to Friday. The exceptions include:

  • A1 and A2: also Sunday, 8.30am to 2pm
  • A6 resident bays in streets west of Brick Lane: 8.30am to 10pm, every day
  • B4: Monday to Saturday, 8.30am to 7.30pm, and Sundays on event days
  • C2 around Trinity Square: Monday to Saturday, plus Sunday until 2pm

Private developments set their own rules for vans. If your building has a loading bay or a booking system for deliveries, tell us when you book, along with the floor.

Private renting in Tower Hamlets

In 2021, 38.2% of Tower Hamlets households rented privately, 46,000 of them against 32,964 in 2011. Another 35.9% rented from a social landlord, with housing associations letting more homes than the council (22.0% of households against 13.9%), and 23.1% owned their home.

Most private tenancies end with an inventory check, and the clerk will open the oven. Letting agents in Canary Wharf or anywhere else in the borough can have the invoice made out to the agency, ask for photos for the checkout file and arrange a key pick-up for an empty flat.

Can you come on a Sunday near Brick Lane?

Yes, at the weekday price. The A6 resident bays west of Brick Lane are controlled every day until 10pm, so the van may need a paid bay there.

How long does a single oven in a tower flat take?

About 90 minutes, at £77. The oven is reassembled, heated and checked with you before the team leaves.

Can you clean the hob and extractor on the same visit?

Yes. A ceramic hob is £23, a gas hob £28 and an extractor hood £28. Say which you have when you call.
