Most of the Fortis Green diary is the six streets the builder W. J. Collins laid out here around 1900, Firs, Birchwood, Fortismere, Leaside, Collingwood and Midhurst, running south off the main road toward Grand Avenue. These are largely intact Edwardian terraces, family houses that kept a full kitchen, so plenty run a freestanding range cooker rather than a fitted single. The area splits roughly in half between houses and converted flats. Larger detached houses toward Muswell Hill throw up the odd two-oven AGA. The upper-floor conversions off Fortis Green Avenue are builder-fitted singles up a shared stair.
The 11am parking window
Parking here is gentle for north London. The Fortis Green controlled zone, marked FG on the signs, only controls parking Monday to Friday from 11am to 1pm, a two-hour window rather than the all-day zones you find elsewhere, so outside that slot and at weekends the technician usually parks close to the door and the carry to the van is short. On-street pay and display is £4.10 an hour inside the window. No call-out fee inside the North and South Circular, no premium for N10.
On the terrace side a door might be N10 while the block opposite is N2, and the oven is the same job either way.

Prices are fixed on the phone. A single is about ninety minutes, a double nearer two hours. Where one of the bigger Collins houses kept its range, our 90cm range cooker clean is £114, and the AGAs in the detached houses off the main road are £143.

Will the kitchen smell of chemicals after?
No. The heavy soaking is out in the van. Indoors we use non-caustic products by hand, so the room is fine to cook in that evening.
Can you park near the house?
Usually yes. The FG zone only controls 11am to 1pm on weekdays, so most bookings we pull up close and the carry is short.
