Little Russia is a nickname with two separate histories in Tottenham, and Bruce Castle Museum, Haringey's local history archive, says they should not be run together.
Two places called Little Russia
The original Little Russia pre-dates the 1917 revolution. In a December 2025 comment on the Harringay Online history site, the museum places it nearer the High Cross, around High Cross Road (demolished, now Monument Road) and the High Road. Immigrants came for work at factories such as Schnurmann's rubber works and Lebus; many were Jewish and set up a synagogue by the High Cross. A 1906 book, Middlesex: Biographical and Pictorial, says the neighbourhood of The Hale was colloquially known as Little Russia because of the Russian settlement there.
The name was also used, within living memory, for the streets around Lorenco Road and Pretoria Road in north Tottenham, and the museum adds that nobody now knows why they got it. Terry Webb's memoir An Edmonton Boy (2000) describes Lorenco Road as demolished. Pretoria Road and the neighbouring Durban Road are still there. The Victoria County History of Middlesex (1976), describing Tottenham's council rebuilding as it stood in 1974, lists new housing already completed between Durban Road and the Edmonton boundary. The museum says the Little Russia label on online maps was added in recent years.
Flats and renters in Bruce Castle ward
Pretoria Road and Durban Road are in Haringey's Bruce Castle ward (2022 boundaries). It had 5,104 households at the 2021 Census, and 47.3% of them lived in a purpose-built block of flats. Renting was the norm: 40.2% rented from the council or a housing association and 32.8% rented privately, while 22.7% owned their home.
Flat kitchens usually have a freestanding cooker or a single oven fitted under the worktop. Either way the job is the same. The racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, the fan cover and the door glass are degreased by hand indoors, with dust sheets down first.

Parking on Pretoria Road and Durban Road
Haringey's controlled parking zone map puts Durban Road and most of Pretoria Road in the Northumberland Park West zone (NPW). The southern end of Pretoria Road, by White Hart Lane, falls in a different zone (Tottenham North), so check the sign on your street. NPW is one of seven zones that get extra controls when the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium holds an event expected to draw more than 10,000 people. The council's list of zone hours gives these times for NPW:

- Event weekdays
- 8am to 8.30pm
- Event weekends and bank holidays
- 12 noon to 8pm
The council says parking is free outside the zone hours, so a weekend with nothing on at the stadium has no charge; we work weekends at the weekday price. On a weekday the bays are controlled for twelve hours, so tell us the street when you call.
