London Oven Cleaners clean Islington ovens from £77. Once the oven is rebuilt and lit, you look it over, and anything you are unhappy with gets fixed there.

At the 2021 Census, 21.3% of Islington's 96,496 households lived in part of a converted or shared house, and in Mildmay ward the figure reached 34.8%. Another 57.4% of the borough's households lived in purpose-built blocks of flats.

Some of Islington's best-known terraces date from the 1820s onwards. In Barnsbury, Gibson Square was let one side at a time between 1829 and 1836, Lonsdale Square was finished in 1845 and Thornhill Square was being laid out in 1848. Islington now has 42 conservation areas. Some ward figures are higher still: in 2021, 30.2% of households in Highbury ward and 34.0% in Tufnell Park lived in converted houses.

A tall terrace split into three or four flats rarely has a generous kitchen. The cooker often sits in a former back bedroom or at the end of the living room, and a built-in single under a short run of worktop is a typical fit. Islington council flats, from Spa Green onwards

Islington Council is landlord to around 36,300 homes: 25,500 let to tenants and 10,800 held by leaseholders. A quarter of all households in the borough (25.0%) rented from the council in 2021, and another 15.2% from a housing association. In Bunhill ward, around Old Street, 86.5% of households lived in purpose-built flats.

The Spa Green Estate in Clerkenwell shows how far back the fitted council kitchen goes. Berthold Lubetkin's practice, Tecton, put it out to tender in spring 1946, and it was listed Grade II* in 1998. Its flats had fitted kitchens from the start, with Garchey waste units beneath the sinks and gas coppers for washing, far more than most households had in the late 1940s. In an estate flat today the oven is usually a 60cm single, built in under the worktop or part of a freestanding cooker.

Prices are fixed on the phone before the visit and weekends cost the same as weekdays. No call-out fee inside the North and South Circular; outside it, any travel charge is quoted on the phone before you book.

Each appliance has one fixed price, given on the phone when you book: £77 for a single and £110 for a double, with the range, AGA, hob and extractor figures in the table.

Parking in Islington's zones, and on match days

Islington's parking zones are lettered from A to Z. The council's zone table puts most of them at 8.30am to 6.30pm on weekdays, many with Saturday controls from 8.30am to 1.30pm. Zone U is controlled only from 10am to midday on weekdays, while zones C and K are controlled around the clock.

Around the Emirates Stadium, zones E, F, G, H, J, L, N, Q and V add match-day hours for Arsenal home games and other big events at the ground:

  • Weekdays: 6.30pm to 8.30pm (zone G from 2pm)
  • Saturdays: 1.30pm to 4.30pm (zones G and Q from noon)
  • Sundays and bank holidays: noon to 4.30pm

Paper visitor vouchers cannot be used during those hours. If a clean near Holloway lands on a fixture, say so when you book and the van will be planned around it.

Splitting the oven door

The rest of the visit follows the same order every time. Dust sheets first. Racks, shelves and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity and fan cover are degreased by hand indoors. The oven is then reassembled and heated, and you inspect it before anything is packed away.

Can you come on an Arsenal match day?

Yes. Tell us the date when you book, and the van will be planned around the extra hours in the nine match-day zones. Weekend visits cost the same as weekdays.

My flat is at the top of a converted house in Highbury. Does that cost more?

No. The price is set by the oven, and you can mention the floor when you book.

Is a double oven much longer than a single?

About half an hour longer. A single takes around 90 minutes and a double about two hours; a double is £110.

Can a letting agent book the clean between tenants?

Yes. In 2021, 31.2% of Islington households rented privately, 30,079 of them, up from 25,217 in 2011. Agents can have the invoice addressed to the agency, ask for photos for the checkout file and arrange a key pick-up for an empty flat.
