Shaftesbury Park in Battersea was the first London estate of the Artizans, Labourers and General Dwellings Company: about 1,200 mainly two-storey terraced houses, completed between 1873 and 1877 and made a conservation area in 1976.

Cottage estates of the 1870s and 1900s

A generation later the London County Council built further south. Totterdown Fields in Tooting, put up between 1901 and 1911, was its first cottage estate, with more than 1,200 houses on 38 acres; it became a conservation area in 1978. Shaftesbury Park in Battersea and Totterdown Fields are both streets of small terraced houses, and a cottage that size usually has a compact kitchen with a built-in single or a freestanding cooker.

The racks and trays come out and are soaked and cleaned separately. In the kitchen, on dust sheets, the cavity and the door glass are degreased by hand, the fan cover as well, and the door is split where it is made to come apart.

Northcote ward's terraced houses

Whole terraced houses are commonest in three wards. In Northcote, 49.3% of households lived in one at the 2021 Census and 62.1% owned their home, the highest ownership of any Wandsworth ward. Tooting Bec followed at 47.3% terraced, then Southfields at 44.2%. Across the borough the figure was 22.2%.

An extended family kitchen has room for a 90cm range cooker or even a two-oven AGA, and each needs more time than a built-in single. Allow two to three hours for the range. The AGA takes about half a day and must be turned off the night before, so it has cooled by the morning.

Flats from Nine Elms to Roehampton

At the other end of the scale, 97.6% of households in Nine Elms ward lived in a purpose-built block of flats in 2021, and 58.4% rented privately. In Nine Elms nearly every kitchen is in a block.

The blocks in Roehampton are older. The London County Council built the Alton Estate there, Alton East in 1958 and Alton West in 1959, and five slab blocks on Highcliffe Drive at Alton West are listed Grade II*; Wandsworth Council is planning redevelopment there. In Roehampton ward, 75.9% of households lived in purpose-built flats and 43.6% were social tenants.

Parking zones with one-hour controls

Wandsworth's controlled zones are lettered by area and split into sub-zones. The council's borough parking map, revised early in 2026, lists hours from one a day to most of the day and evening:

In a one-hour zone the van can often stay for the whole visit, as long as the booking misses that hour or the household has a visitor permit to cover it. In zones like A1 and B8a, a paid bay or a permit is needed for most of the day. The map itself says it is for general information only, so the sign on the street decides.

Wandsworth oven cleaning questions

My Southfields street is controlled for one hour. When should I book?

Outside that hour if you can. S2 and S3 run 1.30pm to 2.30pm on weekdays (Replingham Road in S2 has longer hours), so a morning booking is clear of them, and they have no weekend hours at all. A weekend visit costs the same as a weekday one.

Can a letting agent in Tooting have the invoice?

Yes. In Tooting Broadway ward, 46.3% of households rented privately in 2021, against 36.3% across Wandsworth.
