On 23 December 1891 the London County Council approved nine new streets for the Wimbledon Park Land Company: Replingham and Brookwood Roads, and Astonville, Trentham, Elborough, Engadine, Clonmore, Heythorp and Elsenham Streets. Building was slow at first, then quickened once the District Railway was electrified. By the middle of 1906 the Grid, which had spread south to Lavenham Road and Revelstoke Road, held 1,766 houses, maisonettes and shops.
Terraces and maisonettes on the Grid
The Grid is still rows of terraced houses and maisonettes from those years. A whole terraced house usually has a long, narrow kitchen at the back, and many have since been knocked through or extended, which is where a freestanding 90cm range tends to go. A maisonette is a self-contained home with its own front door in a building shared with another; its kitchen is often smaller, with a built-in single or a 60cm cooker.

Double oven or range cooker?
A double oven is usually 60cm wide, either built into a tall housing or under the worktop, or freestanding in a run of units, with a small top oven over a main one. A range is a freestanding cooker 90cm or more across, usually with two cavities side by side and a hob on top. The two are priced differently, so a photo when you call settles it. The price depends only on the appliance and is fixed on the phone; a single takes about 90 minutes, a double about two hours and a 90cm range two to three.
Parking near Southfields station: zones S1 to S5
Southfields station opened on 3 June 1889, on the District Railway's extension from Putney Bridge to Wimbledon, and it is a 15-minute walk from the All England Club. For most of the year, Southfields' own controlled zones are S1 to S5. The council's Southfields page lists S1 at 9.30am to 4.30pm on weekdays, S2 and S3 at 1.30pm to 2.30pm, S4 at the same hour for permit holders only and S5 from 2pm to 3pm; Replingham Road runs 9.30am to 4.30pm. In a one-hour subzone, a morning booking keeps the van clear of the controls.
